Growth of ice in central Antarctica and relative stability of ocean levels?

Discussion in 'Science' started by DennisTate, Apr 13, 2019.

?

Is the ADDITION of ice to Antactica what has saved us from serious ocean level rise so far?

Is it the fact that two hundred and ninety three CUBIC MILES of ice has been ADDED to the central region of Antarctica annually for decades the reason why the melting on the land based Greenland Ice Pack and the world's glaciers has not yet led to serious rise in ocean levels?

If this statistic is true... the implications are quite huge?

Over the past century the rise in ocean levels is said to be merely four to eight inches.

So why would Mr. Al Gore and others not be putting this statistic all over the media?

My theory is because if the public knew how much ice was being ADDED to the central region of Antarctica they would immediately grasp that a Carbon Tax or Cap and Trade system would NOT work quickly enough to protect vulnerable cities from the threat of eventual rising ocean levels when the formula shifts as could happen quickly if large scale cracking and sliding of ice were to occur on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.

My suggestion is much more dramatic....... mega-scale desalination of ocean water for agriculture, reforestation projects and for towns and cities experiencing a water shortage.

I also advocate turning some low lying land into salt water marinas as can be done on a huge scale in parts of Australia.

Should Sorek 2 be in Australia or California?

    Megascale Desalination
The world’s largest and cheapest reverse-osmosis desalination plant is up and running in Israel.

Your Data and premise are inaccurate:
"Antarctica experienced a sixfold increase in yearly ice mass loss between 1979 and 2017, according to a study published today in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Glaciologists from the University of California, Irvine, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Netherlands' Utrecht University additionally found that the accelerated melting caused global sea levels to rise more than half an inch during that time."

That is certainly a good article but that loss of ice from Antarctica is confined to certain areas:
That article really does not attempt to address all relevant numbers for all of Antarctica but they do do a good job of warning us that what has kept ocean level stable in the past may not continue for too many years in the future.

We Nova Scotians have to be especially concerned about this due to our geography. The residents of Anchorage Alaska are in a similar situation due to their high tide levels being nearly as extreme as in the Bay of Fundy.

Every cubic meter of ocean water that is desalinated and added to the water table in Australia, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar, California, India or Tunisia is really good news for people living along the Bay of Fundy here in Canada or in Anchorage, Alaska, or in New Orleans, or in London or on the Maldive Islands, or any low lying area of the world.

Granted, the dynamics of Antarctica are quite complex and only in the beginning stages of the inevitable changes. I personally carry more concern for the other ice cap as it will effect the global ocean current circulation far more and no level of desalination will make a lick of difference in this situation to anything....it is like pissing on a forest fire. Tidal changes will have an effect on certain regional area but the larger impact will be felt in ALL coastal areas. All of this also focuses on but one aspect of what is happening, which seems to me rather shortsighted as people can move away from danger here....they cannot escape the other problems without extreme actions. Fortunately neither you or I will be alive when this gets bad so what me worry.

True....... the diagrams of warming show that the land based Greenland Ice Pack is the one that is likely to crack and slide on a large scale first due to the warming in the north.

But if an earthquake were to hit the West Antarctic Ice Sheet we could rapidly be wishing that we had decided to invest in large scale desalination because the vulnerability in the Derivatives market make this a good time to shift over to the production of food in desert regions........... for several reasons..... one of which would be to give our low lying cities and towns a buffer zone or buffer time period.

If....if ...IF....deal with the reality of now and please stop your desalination stupidity.

    But what about this video?

Is this not profoundly encouraging and is this now what the long term effect of large scale desalination would be? (Putting carbon back into the soil)!
