SNIP Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday that Democrats are engaging in “theatrics” over gun control legislation, while House Speaker Nancy Pelosi warned that “people are dying” because the Senate leader refuses to act. After a summer of devastating mass shootings, Congress appears no closer to approving legislation to curb gun violence as President Donald Trump wavers on what kind of bill he wants the lawmakers to send for his signature. McConnell refuses to allow a vote on a House-passed bill to expand background checks for gun purchases because he says it’s not clear the Senate would be able to pass the legislation or that Trump would sign it into law. ENDSNIP https://wtop.com/national/2019/09/mcconnell-democratic-theatrics-wont-determine-gun-vote/ I don't want to open another gun control thread!!! That is not the purpose of this thread. McConnell's statement in bold is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE!! (I cannot find a current article that How can conservatives/Republicans support this attitude my McConnell?? McConnell said basically the same thing for DACA during the government shutdown and Election Security this summer. This is NOT the way the government is supposed to work, as I grew up understanding it.. .. Congress writes, debates, and votes on legislation, the President signs into law or vetoes, and Congress can vote to override a veto. How does he get away with this?? Can I find no conservative on here who will condemn this misuse of the power McConnell was given by other R's in the Senate??
Because he is the Senate majority leader and nobody is seriously disputing this is within his powers.
I'm disputing neither... You would say this is a proper use of his powers? This is what his job is? I think he's completely misunderstanding his historical role....
I think he is defending the constitution of the United States from idiots who want to use it as toilet paper.
It is within the accepted authority of a senate majority leader, yes. I suppose if there is vehement disagreement in the senate with his decision they might say something..... *crickets*
And I cannot say what I think of your statement on this forum.... McConnell and Trump (the order changes periodically) is why this country will take decades to recover, if it ever can.... They both will go down in the ashcan of history with Joe McCarthy and Richard Nixon... Shame on all Americans and Kentuckians who voted this slime in...
He is part of the recovery from the debacle that was the Obama administration. We are finally getting back on track. Good job, Mitch.
Great... bring it to a vote in the Republican controlled Senate and shut that **** down, once and for all.... Every additional gun death in America, from this date on, can be laid at the feet of Mitch McConnell.. deserved or not... Since he won't, your statement lacks evidence...
Where was this vim and vigor when old Harry Reid was playing such games? You folks tend to forget, anything Mitch is doing now has already been done, but you folks didn't whine about it then. Why should we care that you choose to whine about it now?
If I had been around in those days, I would have condemned it equally.... If you control your caucus and the bills coming from the House are bad, the problem will take care of itself....
Sure you would have. Guess we'll just have to wait a few decades until you folks win the Senate back to see if that holds true...
We? I hope for McConnell's sake you live in Kentucky and have a lot of like-minded friends... https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/431002-poll-33-of-kentucky-voters-approve-of-mcconnell
“The PPP poll was conducted on behalf of the Ditch Mitch Fund, an advocacy group that opposes McConnell.”
Unless corrupt politicians act in a corrupt manner. I distrust all politicians on both sides of the aisle. Better it just never gets brought up.
mitch is well within his power to do what he's doing. just because you disagree doesn't mean its wrong, it just means you disagree.
it makes it well within his power. Not sure what is hard to digest about that. It is what it is. Whether I like it or not isn't important to the discussion and since I haven't read the nuts & bolts of it I really don't have a strong opinion. Same applies to the House Leader Nancy Pelosi, I might disagree with virtually everything she does but I'm not doubting her authority to do as she pleases, the house (and senate) voted these people in to the leadership role, for better or worse. FWIW, I have opinions on gun legislation that would make 2a supporters cringe, and other opinions on gun legislation that would do the same to the anti gun crowd. Basically if I was in charge of gun control I think both sides would absolutely hate my proposals and i'd most likely have to go into hiding. Gun show loophole, no issues closing that specifically, meaning I won't push for it but won't vote my representative out for his vote. F2F private transactions, not in favor of closing that "loophole", i'd vote against my rep if he supported but its not Huge to me depending on the wording, if its worded improperly, i'd invest time/money to vote them out. I think 20 rounds is plenty for a magazine, so i'd gladly restrict sales of 30+ for all large calibers (ie: not 22 or 22wmr), full support here. semi-auto ban, nope nope nope, and I don't own an AR, but I support those that do and although it shouldn't be necessary i'll toss in a reminder that the AR-s are not the problem with gun violence, if you REALLY want to save lives, go after the handguns (almost impossible but that's where the issue is) background checks? no problems with them, I'd be in favor of expanding them (such as fingerprinting) and minimum 3-5 days wait for all purchases, not just handguns. ps, when I brought up fingerprinting as part of a background check on a dedicated firearms forum I had 3 or 4 supporters and then maybe 15 that basically called me hitler
I think it's easy to forget that 2018 was a split result. The GOP won the Senate. Believe it or not, this is not the first time in US history that a Senate majority leader has refused to hold a vote on legislation passed by an opposition House.
