https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/18/entertainment/apu-hank-azaria-simpsons-trnd/index.html If Apu is off limits than they might as well kill off a bunch of other characters like Krusty, Grandpa Simpson, Comicbook guy, mole man, Flanders, ect. All of them make fun of a stereotype. Seinfeld and Friends unloaded on stereotypes. Might as well start canceling them Why don’t Indians have a sense of humor? Are they claiming they don’t own/work at loads of 7-11 type markets or sound like that? They do. It’s a stereotype that is VERY true. It’s why it’s so funny.
Who cares. Simpson’s haven’t been funny in 25 years. I have the first five seasons blue ray. Those were the days.
American Democrats are slowly imposing Chinese Democrat style censorship on the American people. First they came for Apu...
I agree the early seasons were funnier than now. We’ve got Disney+ to watch it all at least. I just thought it was so amusing when I saw the announcement. Why? Just why? It’s funny doing a voice for decades and suddenly you can’t do it anymore? There are so many stereotypes in the show but please dont hurt the feelings of the poor Indians. Bumblebee guy is next I guess. Or maybe Barney? Can’t make fun of a disease like alcoholism
A cartooned comedy should only be used as a source of hilarity and fun, but sometimes religious sensitivities should also be taken into consideration, I think it defeats the aim to make all people laugh and not to hurt some of them.
Comedy seems to be about telling the truth. People will love you for lying to them. It is the truth that they hate. I think that's all I can see of these people is a bit ridiculous. It was okay for 30 years. Now all the sudden it's not what changed?
It's kind of ironic that you make such a sweeping statement about "Indians" when there is only one person of Indian decent mentioned in the article likes the Simpsons and points out (again) that his commentary on the character has been misunderstood and misrepresented. Truth doesn't make stereotypes funny, exaggeration makes stereotype funny. Most Indians in the US don't actually fit the stereotype you're assuming of them and the character is a exaggerated caricature of that stereotype (just like the caricatures of the other stereotypes in the show). Part of the issue here is that while people won't assume all sailors are like the Pirate Captain (because that is a ridiculously exaggerated caricature) or all Christians are like Flanders (because lots of different Christian characters are depicted too), they do assume all Indians are like Apu. You explicitly proved that point. Getting rid of the character isn't necessarily the right solution (and arguably, it's difficult to come up with a simple solution) but that doesn't mean it isn't a legitimate issue.
The mock straight, white (well, yellow ) males all the time, they just don't mock them because they're straight, white or male. The (presumed) default will never be the basis of this kind of humour.
While I agree 100% with the sentiment of your post, it should be pointed out that Seinfeld and Friends have been cancelled...
Neither of the shows you mentioned were canceled. Jerry Seinfeld quit after the 9th season. Friends wasn't canceled either, just time for them to move on.
