I full-heartedly agree that Monarchies need to end. What is the problem with Eton though? There have surely been substantial experiences gained for those fortunate enough to have attended and earned A levels in Art and Geography. Holy Mary Mother of God. The lack of education among the Royals is simply astounding, isn't it?

Or is it that you simply favor Gordonstoun?

LOL - No doubt his wife will ease the transition. She's gone from worthless celebrity to worthless royalty back to worthless celebrity again.

It would just be the PM in the UK, since they already exert the true power of the role.

I'd like a separation of power, a real check and balance, with a democratically elected upper house as well.

I never understood America's infatuation with the Royal family. We beat them in a war to break away from their royal drama, only to glamorize the living chit out of them today. They do nothing and have no real power other than leach wealth from their own people!

Nope, the PM is the real Head of State in the UK. It is already a done deal. The US system allowed a wanna be NYC mafia Don compromised by Russian Oligarchs to become President, and the Pentagon and the Courts by a stroke of luck preserved the fragility that the vaunted US system teeters upon. If either the Pentagon or the Courts had supported Trump, the US would be over as it has been more or less operative since the end of the US civil war, but there is a lot of stuff to debate here if we are to forge ahead with the differences between the US and the UK style of government.

    How do you achieve that?
How do you ensure they won't be politically motivated?

As a result of Trump as head of state the US lost a lot of international respect.
If things had gone as horribly wrong here as they did there we could have ended up with Nigel Farage in the job.
America has enough influence to survive if some maverick head of state were to describe Angela Merkel as an unfuckable lard arse. The UK does not.

Can you imagine the Queen or Charles ever saying something like that?

Good question. May not have been member of a political party for 10 years, nor a donor, nor lobbying officials.Probably other criteria.

I just don't know how you could ensure it.
I suspect that anyone qualified for the job wouldn't want it anyway.
We never even knew which side of the Brexit divide HM was on. Sure, we could guess but as far as I know she never said a word.
Can you think of anyone in the public eye that could win an election but stay so publicly neutral?
I'd love someone like Stephen Fry but he'd upset a lot of right wingers.
The risk of electing someone to the position is that you'd just end up with a popularity contest and end up with someone from Made in Chelsea or TOWIE.

No, I cannot imagine even goofball Boris saying something like that.

Ha! I had to re-read that, I at first thought it was something Trump said rather than Berlusconi.

I suspect Charles may have a bit of difficulty maintaining the strict neutrality his mother has built a reputation upon.

Also, I anticipate that the general conduct of the Royals will be noticeably less restrained after the loss of QEII.

I wonder - Is it likely that QEII expressed an interest in having Harry return home to attend to his grandfather and that his failure to do so precipitated this announcement of divestitures?

Maybe in some demographics but overall he gives the impression of being thoroughly "whipped". I had much respect for him doing a couple of tours in Afghanistan but his choice in marriage erased a lot of that. It's quite clear who wears the pants in that house.

Yeah, imagine the horror of having a wife who doesn't know her place.

Cancel culture. It's only ok depending on one's choice of footwear?

I don't think the neutrality can diminish. They are under such scrutiny.
When it leaked out that HM had ''purred'' on hearing that the Scottish independence referendum had failed it caused a major scandal. That was a private phone call where she was supposed to have expressed an emotion. What ever anyone says, it's that lack of freedom of speech Harry and Meghan left the Royal family over. It's not the Queen who keeps the Royals in check, it is Parliament.
No, I don't think the Queen's decision had anything to do with the DoE's illness. When Harry left it was decided that there would be a period of trial separation and if he still wanted to leave at the end he would lose his titles and all his duties then.
This isn't really that big a story, it was an inevitable result of Harry's original decision. It hasn't come as a big surprise.

The Queen is strong cement to UK history and identity.
Wills and Kate will carry that through the next two generations (Charles will be King but hasn't represented the younger generations of Brits' accepted culture) and Harry was going to be floating around opening and closing things, standing to attention when required and attending functions when he would rather be playing with his children.
Good for them both. A pity but perhaps not really.
