the bible is full of accounts of impressive miracles... but they all seem to be in the distant past.
You have great plagues, world wide floods, stone tablets, raising people from the dead, splitting the red sea, earthquakes, stars in the sky guiding travelers across great distances.... and no doubt many others

But it seems like we really do not have such miracles any more. It seems an obvious question to ask: Why no more miracles?

According to Exodus 34:10(TLB) God only does miracles on behalf of Israel = "10 The Lord replied, “All right, this is the contract I am going to make with you. I will do miracles such as have never been done before anywhere in all the earth, and all the people of Israel shall see the power of the Lord—the terrible power I will display through you."

In the Bible, Gentiles were never the beneficiaries of miracles.

We’d still all see them though, especially in the context of the grand-scale examples listed in the OP. It seems impossible to deny a difference between what is depicted as having happened in the Bible and what we see today.

Why do miracles have to be big?

'Mysterious voice' led Utah cops to discover child who survived for 14 hours in submerged car after mom drowned

science has explained much, so people no longer have as much need to declare things as miracles

Today we have scientific explanations for natural phenomena. In the second and third century AD they were mysteries and, hence, miracles. Some of those miracles could be fiction designed to teach a moral lesson.

Same reason we no longer have traveling medicine shows. But we do have Kramer and other charlatans that claim to predict the future.

Oh comon. We listen endlessly to the few survivors of disasters that kill hundreds and sometimes thousands about how god saved them.

previous religions already chained to have done that, Judaism just added the story to their religion and changed a few things - we should go back to the original religion vs the copies should we?

The fact the heavens haven’t opened and sent a stupendous bolt of lightening to vaporise the Vatican and St Peters off the face of the planet is either a miracle, God has zero conception of morality, or simply doesn’t exist.

My point of view is that there are no miracles during the last 1000 years that would have made it into the bible

NOTHING in the last 2000 years can ever make it into the Bible(s)….they are stagnant and only change by church command.

There are still miracles, but they are little miracles. Nothing so obvious as to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt to everyone that "this was supernatural".

Then how is it Rome justifies the creation of new saints with the precondition of evidence the candidate performed miracles?

That does not change the Bible(s), and "Miracles" are whatever they decide on.

Isn't it miracle enough that anyone in their right mind could openly support a pedophile ring?

No miracle need be involved when you raise the young to worship a deity who tortured his own son.

    1. According to Rudolph Steiner, there was a time in the distant past when people were more mythical/mystical/spiritual/psychic in their approach to everyday ordinary existence and even more so in extreme circumstances. They didn't have as much cause-and-effect understanding that we have. The rooster crowed to encourage the sun to rise. John Barleycorn must die and be resurrected in the next crop much like the sun does at the spring equinox (or is it the winter solstice?).

    2. One investigator cites the ability of people with special powers to alter reality, i.e. install changes that will take place in the future and even rewrite past history to match. They are the small percentage of the population who are easy to hypnotize. Some of them perceive direction coming from their "second mind." Under extreme conditions, they can subconsciously "install miracles." This may be done to reduce the level of conflict in the universal belief system caused by too much unrealistic behavior. Sometimes it is manifested as a drastic but necessary catastrophe, such as the likely imaginary wall that fell on 80,000 Assyrians who were about to demolish a city of the chosen race. In such a scheme, it hasn't yet been necessary to conjure up our waterloo, but the doomsday clock is pressing on.

Father, do you believe in miracles?

Of course, I watched the sun rise just this morning.

There were hundreds of years in OT times when no miracles happened. They generally were to signify the authenticity of a prophet or apostle, or Jesus. Irenaeus reporached the Gnostic's lack of miracles by noting an orthodox church in France where raising of the dead was frequent.

There are miracles happening today, but just as when Jesus did them, many who have already decided to reject God aren't impressed.

What would constitute a proven miracle to the skeptics? Does it have to be done in a lab? Would skeptics become Christians if they saw one? If not, what's the point of this discussion?
