~ I want to believe that the selfish idiots who are hoarding are a small minority of fellow residents. I really do not want the realization that the dumbing down of society is alive and well.´

I know who are the preppers around here, and they will be glad to give me what I need.

They will even give me more than I ask.

think how many households in a town, then think how many packs of toilet paper stores have, doesn't take many of them deciding they only have a few rolls left, they better make sure they have enough to last a couple of months, to run the store dry

then news of shortage and everyone that bought toilet paper as needed in past, goes and buys some extra, if everyone does this, stores go out of stock quick

[IMG] ~ I was thinking the high-fiber diet craze was the reason for panic ...

~ The idea is to have your own storage to avoid depending on others. Don't forget first-aid supplies and prescription medications .

I have my own storage and all the first-aid supplies and meds necessary for a year.

The preppers are my fall back position.

my grandma lived through the depression, and I remember she always had tons of extra canned food around, a real food shortage changes peoples behaviors, often for life

If you don’t own a firearm, you are society’s fall back position.

Exactly. It's been fascinating to see all the "don't hoard!" bleatings, though. Really tells you who people are.

This part is going to prove to be crucial.

The self-sufficient collectives will do just fine :)

Preppers aren't the problem, panic and hoarding are. The country hasn't run out of toilet paper or flour and eggs, panic buying just keep the shelves empty.

"Hoarders" are not the selfish ones. It's those who DIDN'T 'hoard' when they were asked to weeks ago, who are the problem. They keep going out and increasing risk to everyone, and will ultimately have to lean on stretched resources if they run out of supplies.

So instead of panicing, everyone should have bought a little extra each week starting a month ago. That's what we were advised to do. If you didn't do that, you made yourself a panic buyer.

I have been prepared for years, if you come to me for TP, you best come with a beer or two.

    Is this a joke?

No, guy. It's those who DIDN'T prepare for this who are selfish idiots.

Not a week ago, a year ago. You don’t wait for something on the horizon to begin.

Okay. Not selfish. Sheltering at home must have the side effect of growing multiple extra buttholes to survive 2-4 weeks.

Of course. I'm talking about the non-preppers. They were advised a month ago to prepare for a two week lockdown.

That's a commercial quantity. Drug laws should apply!

People were also advised that grocery stores would remain open and fully stocked. The request has been made to stop panic buying and only buy what you need for two weeks. That way there would be enough for everybody and people could go home and stay home for two weeks.

You know people are buying/hoarding huge quantities for resale to desperate friends and neighbors at a huge markup. There's no reason we should have a black market for TP. None.

What part of 'self-isolation' is hard to understand in the advice we were given? It was never strictly about supplies - this is about people staying the **** at home, as requested. If EVERYONE had laid in their supplies when initially asked, this disease would be far less advanced than it is. It was incredibly irresponsible to ignore that advice (and there wouldn't be panic buying today). Even going to supermarket once a week is irresponsible at the moment .. yet some people are actually going more often than that, because they can't find what they need in any given visit. All because they couldn't be arsed doing what they were asked to do and plan ahead.

That's on supermarkets, to police quantities. Exploiters will always find a way, and they thrive in a crisis.
