So I was crunching the numbers on homelessness in Finland. Even with Finland started just buying homeless people houses, therebare 7000 and change homeless people in Finland. Seems like a low Number, except that Finland only has 5 million people. So the homeless rate for Finland is .13%

The US has 500,000 homeless people. Seems high. But we have 320 million people. So our homeless rate is .17%

So even with buying anyone who wants a house housing, Finland's homelessness is only marginally less than the US. When you look at those numbers its hard to declare it some sort of triumph.

Those places already exist. There is no shortage of public and private programs to help people who really want it. I used to sit on the board of a fortune 50 company's charity program, I know how much money is funneled to them. Like I said, for the drug addicts, it is a lifestyle choice. They do not want rehab. They do not want help.

If I recall, Richard Milhous 'Tricky Dick' Nixon, once lived in the great state of California, along with one Ronald 'Ray Gun' Reagan. Both Republican Presidents of our relatively recent political past.

Taxes went up as a direct result of both those administrations and the legislation they signed into law. So, the notion that somehow, republicans have a lock on lowering taxes in California, or the nation is just not factual. In fact, it was Nixon, who took us off the gold standard and he did so for reasons that he declared which he knew to be false.

It was the last move the Federal Reserve needed to secure total control over our money supply and to destroy Bretton Woods. A "Tricky Dick" indeed and without equal when it came to making public television comments he knew full well to be untruthful about how he as President, was working on behalf of the American People, when in fact, he was a paid shill for the going concern, the International Banking Community. So, I weep not for Republicans, nor do I hallucinate for one minute that somehow Democrats have done any better with their death grip lock on the California State legislature.

Having said that, my biggest concern here in California, is the government's attack on the Second Amendment and those who wish to keep themselves free from the tyranny of a government willing to become tyrannical. Taxing residents into oblivion, is a form of governmental tyranny - except that Voting Democrats here can't see the trees for the forest. They are so caught up in their "Liberal Expressions" that the notion of actually paying attention to what tyranny actually means, somehow, escapes them.

Nonetheless, it is very heard to beat this kind of living:

Honestly, the only place on the West Coast that I think might rival certain parts of Southern California, would be certain parts of Bellevue Washington, in one of the "Lakes" areas. Other than that, as far as really nice places go, its hard to beat certain areas of SoCal when money is not the limiting factor. Of course, this has absolutely nothing to do with the politics here, which will always be Moderate Liberal all the way down the tubes to Ultra Liberal in certain places - especially up in Northern California (San Francisco, etc.).

Great, then let's see your research. If you can't provide any, then we'll know it's your claim that's complete BS.

Very good points. For the mentally ill, there is no other choice but to provide housing and assistance. For drug addicts, prison doesn't seem to be helping them, so that money can be used for rehab. It would be interesting to see what paying rehabs based on their success would do.

For those with low IQs, there's always government work! But seriously, many can be helped by giving employers tax incentives for hiring those in the program.

So all anyone has to do to own a house in Finland, is declare themselves homeless. That seems fair.

You seem unaware that there are whole families who are homeless and a substantial percentage of children in schools are homeless

    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/15/nyregion/homeless-students-nyc-schools-record.html

Homelessness is a very complicated problem, not every homeless person is on drugs, mentally ill or old.

That being said it seems apparent that you have a correct viewpoint on the difficulties involve and you seem to be saying that we as a society should provide some sort of social safety net as an integral part of our social infrastructure

    Unfortunately, most conservatives don't.

Those are beautiful photos but I think Central Coast Californians may assert the opinion that the most beautiful coastline is up there. Higher mountains/ vast open lands.

Gorgeous. Are the photos of Montana? I've already commented that the entire Western US is magnificent compared to the rest of the country.

They don't buy everyone a house. What are you talking about ?

Also, the universal income was not designed to solve homelessness either, which is practically non-existent there. They were trying to simplify the system.

The drug of choice in Finland (and other Nordic countries) is booze, and lots of it. It is as bad as other drugs when you become a chronic alcoholic.

According to this article the ACLU found that these Orange county homeless shelters have bed bugs/ mosquitoes/ cockroaches and staff mistreated mentally ill and the elderly. Of-course living on the street/ around the rivers and on the beach means being exposed to bugs but some feel safer on their own. The ACLU point out that such a wealthy county has "no meaningful movement toward expanding access to affordable housing and supportive housing".

"ACLU report provides damning review of Orange County temporary homeless shelters: ‘Jail is better’ https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-orange-county-aclu-temporary-shelters-20190314-story.html

The homeless rate in finland is .13

    https://www.google.com/search?q=fin...d-att-us-revc&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8

    In America its .17

    https://www.google.com/search?ei=W62KXLHlHJXr-gTVm7GgAQ&q=homeless+rate+in+america

So contrary to this commonly held belief that they have erradicated homelessness, they are actually only doing a marginally better job than the US.

Finland has 7000 homeless people. Homelessness is not a huge problem in US, it just tends congregate in warmer States, and certain people love to speak about homeless in California.

Yeah 7000 out of a population of only 5 million. Like I said, its virtually the same percentage as in the US.

Reading the first paragraph of that, they count people "sleeping in the homes of relatives" as homeless. I mean, what?? They also count people in 'temporary housing' as homeless. Again, this is just frankly a bizzare misuse of language as I understand it. If you are in housing, you arent homeless.

I dont really see how that gets lumped into the same statistic as a drug user living under a bridge. Which is what I'm talking about.

I live in SoCal. Today I have several choices. I could play tennis, go surfing, golf, beach comb, hike, ski, do some gardening and live in a diverse community of like minded people who live and let live. If that sounds attractive to you then come on down. If that is not worth paying a few extra bucks in taxes, stay in Texas or in the bomb cyclone states. It's a great big country folks, go where you thrive.

The ski resorts are enjoying a wonderful snow season locally and the Sierra has so much snow depth that spring skiing conditions should last well into summer.

It makes no sense that they are fleeing horrible liberal policies, and then move to a better place so they can ruin it too. How dumb are they?

I would compare it to a horde of destructive animals that move from one pasture to another, ruining every pasture they come into contact with.

It seems many Republicans would be embarrassed by how the GOP and especially Trump are constantly ridiculed. Just to be effective, several state reps/ congress people switched from Republican to Democrat and won against long-term incumbent Republicans. Schwarzenegger as governor warned that the California GOP is "dying at the box office". He was right yet stubborn and perhaps less astute Republicans refuse to accept the reality and now have virtually no influence in the largest state in America. A state that has tremendous influence in the world sadly views Republicans as delusional irrelevant and unacceptable. Reagan is rolling over in his grave.

Oh I don't know, your own OP admits that the rich are moving to California, while the rest, the middle class, the poor are struggling and leaving the state in huge and ever increasing numbers, the standard of living is collapsing, the crime rate is among the nation's highest, so is the poverty rate, public schools are among the nation's worst, the homeless situation is horrible, SF is full of sh&t (literally)…..

I doubt the rest of the country as admires this transformation of an amazing state into a socialist "paradise" of uber-rich elites and devastated middle class as you think we do.

Good, so all this incessant leftist whining notwithstanding, Trump's tax cuts work, provide relief to the poor and middle class while the rich appear to be doing just fine too.
