The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a political decision to test nuclear weapons on the population and to publicize their effect. It was an abomination to kill 200,000+ people to pander to politician's egos and intimidate the Russians and other countries.

We gave them three days after the first bomb to surrender. They refused. They got a second bomb.

What is this guy talking about? The firebombing killed more people than the nukes did.

They should have just left us alone, we didn't ask to be in the war and there is no reason to put more of our troops in harms way than need be.

sick of progressives and their whiney arses blaming everything on us. For (*)(*)(*)(*)s sake there would be no Hiroshima or Nagasaki if the Japanese didn't decide to attack us.

There would have been no Afghanistan or Iraq without 9/11.

Anyone see the common denominator here?

WE WERE ATTACKED FIRST. Sorry we didn't take the progressive approach and let our enemies butt rape us into sumbission.

Before some true patriot jumps in here and gets all trumpian and starts throwing around ethnic and racist terms about the Japanese, I will say that I agree completely with Truman's decision. And I live here.

This is very old news. Dropping the bombs had no military value to win WWII. We didn't need to do it and we didn't need to invade. Japan was on the defensive and surrendering anyway with Germany defeated.

Do you always create your own realities? ever live in the one that is?

To the topic, dropping the atomic bombs saved millions of lives and allowed Japan to continue and flourish as a sovereign nation. Trivializing that kind of decision as merely "ego-driven" is naïve and insulting to the men who were forced by history to make it.

OP, what would you tell the parents of 2 million or more Allied soldiers, "well we could have ended the war conclusively before your son died, but we didn't want to seem ego-driven?"

My wife's uncle may have survived as a POW if we could have bombed Japan sooner. He died of neglect as a POW after the Bataan Death March.

Conditional surrender was on the table, the Allies for Germany and Japan demanded unconditional surrender. Period. And one would think after we dropped the first Atomic Bomb they would have the sense to accept our terms. And after the horrors done to China, our troops and subject nations it was a good feeling to break them with our ultimate weapon. And Yamamoto warned his own people about out industrial and technical might once unleashed they were doomed.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed because they were military targets and we were at the height of the most brutal war in human history.

Not an abomination though to attack military targets at the height of a war of unprecedented brutality.

Actually there wasn't a decision. Deciding whether or not to use the A-bombs would have been as goofy as deciding whether or not to use guns.

We just went ahead and dropped the bombs on military targets as soon as they were ready for use.

Hiroshima was a huge military center filled with tens of thousands of Japanese soldiers and was the military headquarters in charge of repelling any invasion in the southern half of Japan.

Nagasaki was an industrial center containing massive weapons factories.

That is incorrect. Only one military leader objected to the bombing. And he kept quiet about it and only told a single person, who didn't bother to pass it on to anyone else.

What he wrote years after the war had little impact on events that occurred during the war (unless you wish to argue for the existence of time machines).

The only thing Leahy had to say about the A-bombs during the war was: "I'm an expert in explosives and I promise you that those contraptions will never work."

There are no records of either one of them opposing the bombs before they were used.

Yet Japan was still refusing to surrender and had millions of soldiers waiting to fight to the death when we invaded.

In reality Japan was refusing to surrender and the future invasion promised to to be just as bloody to US forces as the entirety of WWII up to that point had been.

Records show that Japan did not try to surrender until after both A-bombs were dropped.

There are no records of any mass delusion that Japan was seeking to surrender before the bombs were dropped.

Always interesting to see how the Left tries to characterize the hope that the Soviets could be dissuaded from crushing nearby democracies.

No one promised Russia that they would be allowed to overthrow democracies in nearby nations.

KGB propaganda. They put out similar tripe in modern times to justify their invasions of Ukraine and Georgia.

    - - - Updated - - -

Hindsight is easy. When the bombs were dropped no one had any idea what it would take to make Japan surrender.

Japan did not decide to surrender until after both A-bombs had been dropped.

Whoever wrote the article was a (*)(*)(*)(*)ing retard. Plain and simple, no argument whatsoever can be made to deny it. How do we know this absolute FACT? From his very first 3 sentences! Are you freaking kidding dude? Everyone with a smartphone can do a simple 5 minute Google search and find that those sentences are absolute and utter horse(*)(*)(*)(*). For (*)(*)(*)(*)s sake Hiroshima was the command center for the ENTIRE defense force of southern Japan. Both cities were were major manufacturing centers producing war goods and materials. Both cities were major harbors and shipping yards. Both cities houses thousands of Japanese troops. Hiroshima was a major communications hub. The list just goes on and on. These cities were literally the very definition of military target. If your in a Total War, THESE are the cities you would target. What a (*)(*)(*)(*)ing idiot.

What are you babbling about? Are you sure you have the right thread? I said that I support the decision to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Perhaps you have a reading comprehension problem (English is difficult) or maybe you just want to go off on the usual predictable rant about blahblahbah bad People Who Ain't LIke Me but start from the beginning and try again. With a dictionary, thesaurus and rules of grammar primer, please. :wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall::wall:

Perhaps we should thank scientists at Los Alamos who leaked some information on the atomic bomb. Several spies broke America's nuclear monopoly by sending back to Russia critical information that helped speed the Soviet nuclear program.

If they are going to spank Germany every day for the rest of eternity for WWll and the Holocaust, they should spank Japan for the holocaust it perpetrated in Asia.

    https://www.hawaii.edu/powerkills/SOD.CHAP3.HTM

In the article it says that from 1937 when the Japanese invaded China to the end of the Second World War, the Japanese killed an estimated 2-10 million people (six being the most popular estimate) including many POW's. Dropping the bomb was a good ass kick for a nation as blood thirsty as the Japanese. By contrast, the Germans are said to have killed 11 million people. The difference is Germany is castigated almost everyday for its murderousness.

You are evidently wrong and are just easily convinced by propaganda. The decision was wrong on humanitarian and strategic grounds.

Blabla, what you did was throw in a Trump bash and false assessment of posters here as anti Japanese bigots when nothing like that was warranted based on posts to the thread.

How many repetitious and superfluous threads on this issue (which should have never clogged this forum to begin with) do we need?
And now long, tedious space hogging posts are being re-posted within threads, as if things weren't bad enough. Would some mod please get his act together
and haul this waste of space away?

I think the people who robbed you of an education with the loads of horse(*)(*)(*)(*) liberal revisionist history they fed you should be locked up.

Other posters, take notice of this person.

Be concerned with the quality of your own or your children education.

The intentional programming through liberal revisionist history is designed to create a society that believes the American White Male is the enemy of all humanity.

Love it when people weren't even alive for that era all of a sudden know everything about it.

Too many people looking back instead of looking forward. No wonder this country is regressing.

That's crap. Japan wasn't remotely considering a surrender until the bombs were dropped. In fact, one bomb wasn't enough ... it took two.

You sound like a Commie apologist. Lots of them around.

Stalin was just so nice to the people in the lands he occupied in the Ukraine (ever hear of the Holodomor?), Finland, the Baltic States and Poland (that he invaded with Hitler in 1939). Yes the millions sent from these occupied lands to the gulags, work camps and ditches with bullets in their heads, were just a warning for what was to come to the Germans and Eastern Europe.

Commie War Crimes, only a handful of convictions worldwide since 1917. What a joke!

The poster stated nothing about Trump. He mentioned he agreed with Truman, which I do also. Maybe you should reread it.
