There are literally hundreds of period specific articles we could post that discussed school or public recreation programs wherein boys were required to swim nude as opposed to the girls, who always wore suits. Prior to the 1970s, this was standard practice and thus, such articles are unremarkable and restate the obvious. I can attest to this from personal experience. Junior High we had to swim nude. The girls wore a one piece that was see through when wet. It was really no big deal, we were kids but we did want to see the girls!
how often was swim practice? And not to be taken too seriously, but do you recognize anyone in the pictures as school mates?
I forget, that was 50 years ago. Wasn’t often. I remember we had to jump off the diving board and were warned not to if we couldn’t swim. A black kid who probably didn’t want to look bad jumped and went straight to the bottom. The coach jumped in and brought him up and resuscitated him.
This was also back when many really couldn’t afford a lot. Back when things were much different, for instance back when schools had rifle teams. That is not considered PC today. Heck, I didn’t go to graduation because I didn’t want to burden my Mom with gown rental.
Many school in NYC also had this sexist practice. Thankfully, it was ended when Title IX was applied by school districts which gradually spread to many others.
