.....Then on Feb 2, 1946, US General Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, issued a statement limiting Japanese territories to the four major islands and about 1,000 small islands situated north of 30 deg latitude. Since the Ryukyus, and also Diaoyu islands, lie south of 30 deg latitude, they are, legally speaking, no longer Japanese territory.

....the US has never challenged China's sovereignty over the Ryukyus and Diaoyu islands.

....Tokyo is obliged to respect the 1943 Cairo Declaration, the 1945 Potsdam Declaration and the so-called MacArthur Line defining the extent of Japanese sovereignty..... (End excerpts)

These islands were neither part of Taiwan nor part of the Pescadores Islands which were ceded to Japan from the Qing Dynasty of China in accordance with Article II of the Treaty of Shimonoseki which came into effect in May of 1895. Accordingly, the Senkaku Islands are not included in the territory which Japan renounced under Article II of the San Francisco Peace Treaty. They came under US control after World War II. The United States kept that group of small islets for occasional bombing practice targets, largely for its Liu Chiu based Air Force. Japan claimed that the Diaoyutai Islands are part of Liu Chiu. The Senkaku Islands have been placed under the administration of the United States of America as part of the Nansei Shoto Islands, in accordance with Article III of the said treaty, and are included in the area, the administrative rights over which were reverted to Japan in accordance with the Agreement Between Japan and the United States of America Concerning the Ryukyu Islands and the Daito Islands signed on 17 June 1971.

.....Ryukyu historical records showed that from 1383 onwards, its kings derived their mandate to rule the islands from the Chinese emperor. This continued for nearly five centuries until 1879, when Japan annexed the islands and called them Okinawa prefecture.

This is well documented in historical records, which is why when the US-led Allied powers held discussions on "restoring territories", referring to Chinese territories that Japan had taken by force, both the Ryukyus and Taiwan were included.

According to American official records (Roosevelt-Chiang Dinner Meeting, Foreign Relations of the United States, 1943), then US President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked about China's intentions regarding the Ryukyus at a private dinner meeting with Chinese Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek on the sidelines of the 1943 Cairo Conference.

"The President then referred to the question of the Ryukyu islands and enquired more than once whether China would want the Ryukyus.

"The Generalissimo replied that China would be agreeable to joint occupation of the Ryukyus by China and the United States and, eventually, joint administration by the two countries under the trusteeship of an international organisation.".....

A paragraph in a Memorandum of the White House Conference in January 1944 read: "President Roosevelt also recalled that Stalin is familiar with the history of the Liuchiu islands and that he is in complete agreement that they belong to China and should be returned to her, and further that the civil administration of all islands now controlled by Japan should be taken over by the United Nations."

These two records amply show that the common international understanding at the time was that the Ryukyus belonged to China.... (End excerpts)

Henceforth in all discussions and dialogues, China should vigorously pursue the matter of joint administration of the Ryukyus, seek satisfactory explanation, territorial return or compensation from the US.

China should include the Vietnamese designed 6-star flag in a special passport for any Chinese citizen on a visit to Vietnam."

    Uncertain clouds over East Asia
Thu, Feb 07, 2013 - Since last year, East Asia has been overshadowed by various mounting geopolitical tensions due to the escalation of territorial disputes in the East and South China seas. As a major disputing claimant in both cases, China’s recent military assertiveness and jingoistic rhetoric have been perceived negatively by neighboring countries and triggered a series of countermeasures taken by other disputing claimants to balance against China’s expansion of military clout in the region.
