Hong Kong (CNN) -- The Hong Kong government said Monday that riot police have pulled back from pro-democracy demonstrations around the city that have caused widespread disruption in one of Asia's financial hubs.

Defiant demonstrators remained on the streets of Hong Kong's financial center, blocking traffic on key highways a day after clashes with police that left more than 40 people injured.

Explaining the decision to withdraw the riot police, the government said in a statement that the protesters on the streets were now behaving peacefully. But protesters have pointed out that the unrest Sunday resulted from heavy-handed police tactics.

Hong Kong is being gripped by pro-democracy protests. Demonstrators are angry at China's decision to allow only Beijing-vetted candidates to stand in the city's elections for chief executive in 2017. Protesters blocked the central business district on Monday, September 29, 2014. The government urged the demonstrators to disperse to allow emergency vehicles, public transport and other traffic to pass. Its statement followed calls from some protest organizers for people to return home.

Hong Kong: Protesters defiant amid stand-off

Thousands of pro-democracy protesters are blocking Hong Kong's streets, shutting down the territory's business hub and ignoring appeals to leave.

Crowds remained on the streets overnight after a day that saw riot police deploy tear gas and batons in a bid to disperse them.

On Monday, the Hong Kong government said riot police were being withdrawn as people had "mostly calmed down".

But some banks and schools were closed, and there was transport chaos.

Protesters are angry at Beijing's plans to vet candidates in Hong Kong's 2017 elections.

Hong Kong's chief executive has reassured the public that rumours the Chinese army might intervene were untrue.

"I hope the public will keep calm. Don't be misled by the rumours," CY Leung said.

Ahead of rush-hour on Monday, police issued a statement urging protesters to "stay calm, stop charging police cordon lines and occupying the main roads".

    Be careful!!!

    Stay safe!!

There are a number of Old Maoists still controlling the Police and Military.

They really don't care about you or anyone else...they just care about what is thought and seen.

They must be removed....but they will eventually die out.

The umbrella revolution is already over 70 days, the hope of Hong Kong seems fading out. yet we still don't want to be desperate.

in fact, this is not the end, this is not even the beginning of the end, but the end of the beginning.

China has broken Hong Kong agreement, say British MPs-10846423_10152856409770569_3319028354927157667_n.jpg

(yet the pro-govt media just show the video which capture the female protester gone mad, after she suffered the sexual abuse.)

the following axxhole cop threaten a female protester that if she not shut up then he will take her to police station and rape her.
China has broken Hong Kong agreement, say British MPs-10499566_771079506377876_7425838490379908288_o.jpg
(yet the pro-govt media (actually means all main stream local media) only focus on the group of protesters attacked that cop, in fact, those protesters had heard he threatened a girl like that so they were very angry and attacked him, then the suck cop pretended to lock-up, but when other people tried to take his cop pass he woke up suddenly.)

and I will so appreciate if you do me a little favor, to share this all over the world!

let the world know, the level of the deterioration of Hong Kong police after they take out the "Royal" title.
