There is no constitutional right to drive a car on a public road, there is a constitutional right to keep and bear arms. "shall not be infringed.............."

My proposal does not infringe it, any more than 'background' checks do, or 'waiting periods' do.

Treating guns as cars would mean:

I can have any gun that exists, unliscened, unregistered, uninsured and modified however I like, so long as it isn't operated on public property. Is that what you think the law should be?

No I don't. I reckon that owning/driving a gun should be legally controlled just like driving a car is. You introduced the 'public road' red herring.

Its not a red herring. I can do as I wish with whatever car I can afford on my property. If I cant do the same with guns, then guns =\= cars.

I drove for years without a license, or testing, or insurance, or law enforcement supervision. Probably not a great analogy.

Okay, I can accept that. Will you accept that the instant you drive your car/gun off private property, you should become subject to my proposals? You are right. A kid can lawfully enter a car yard here and but a car, but what he then does with it is severely restricted.

Imagine. In the US, there is a new offence. Being in charge of a gun in a public place while intoxicated and Cops given power to check and enforce just like they can with cars......probable cause included.

I didn’t own land at that age. But I drove on a lot of people’s places who did. Surely there are places down there where kids are expected to drive before legal age?

Can't carry around nukes either. Still not an argument to mandate permits on firearms or w/e restrictions you think we're lacking.

"Permits?" No. I am suggesting the same licencing and regulation regime for driving/owning guns as exists for driving/owning cars.

As a relatively pro-gun liberal, I don't think this line of reasoning is very persuasive. Live free or die is not everybody's mantra. Cars are necessary for the way our economy is set up. We don't have adequate public transportation in the US. It takes like 3 times as long to go anywhere where I have had public transportation compared to a car. Much is done to mitigate the damage done by cars.

For guns, the most potentially persuasive argument to a liberal is that it would not be effective in curbing crime because criminals don't obey the law and black markets ensure that the supply remains (just like drugs). Controlling guns is likely to get even less effective given that 3D printing of guns exists, and so now ghost guns can be produced completely bypassing any kind of registration system.

Once reliable technological improvements can make guns safer (e.g. only fired by the owner), legislation should encourage that. But gun murder being a problem isn't a symptom of having more lax gun laws. It's something else about our culture.

No you're not. You already stated as much when you said ppl should'nt be able to have any guns they want on private property. So =\= cars.

You want guns to be more regulated than cars

How many deaths are caused deliberately by car compared to how many deaths caused deliberately by gun.

Im a proponent of not making outlaws of those who would seek effective self defense from outlaws.
