The House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol has decided to make criminal referrals to the Department of Justice, the panel’s chairman, Rep. Bennie Thompson, told reporters Tuesday.

Thompson, a Mississippi Democrat, said the committee has not narrowed down the universe of individuals who may be referred.

Asked whether Thompson believed any witnesses perjured themselves, he said, “that’s part of the discussion.”

When the panel makes referrals, Thompson said it will be a separate document from the panel’s final report that will be sent to DOJ.

The committee is expected to meet later Tuesday.

    No surprise there.

The Committee has made a strong case that Trump is directly responsible for the riot on 1/6.

He fabricated a pretext out of thin air, encouraged it, and did nothing when his supporters were attacking the Capitol.

Trump must face his crimes even though his MAGA's will still see it as a conspiracy against him.

There can be no impunity for what he has done and I am sure that many moderate Republicans will be happy to see him face justice, which would further reduce his chances of a political comeback.

Doesn’t mention if Trump is one of those referred, if I am mistaken, most of the referrals involve lying to the Committee and similar procedural charges

It matters little, as much as I hate to admit it, Trump ain’t going to jail regardless of any charges or legal procedures. With his army of attorneys and accountants he will delay, postpone, and appeal any and every single legal action involving him way out beyond his lifetime

And politically not even sure it would hurt him in the end, the GOP, and a major “news” network, would defend him regardless of the charges

I agree with you that Trump will take any legal means available to slow down the justice process.

But he will have to pay for it out of his own pocket, since the GOP is no longer paying for his legal fees.

He will try to pass the bill on to MAGA.

On the political side, it is inconceivable and desirable for liberals that about 30% of Republicans would remain loyal to Trump, no matter what.

But rebellion is rumbling through the ranks, especially as moderates are delivering electoral defeats to conservatives.

Civil war is inevitable within the GOP.

The Committee itself was fabricated as a pretext to indict Trump on anything. Without 1/6 and the riots, they would have manufactured something else, like they did with the Russian Hoax.

This is just a distraction from Biden's incompetence and constant lying, inflation, high gas prices, baby formula still hard to find, freaks being hired into his admin, the war in Ukraine which he's perpetuating, Biden's racist and pedo history, the weakness he conveys to our enemies, the invasion at the southern border, out of control crime, and most of all, the Big Guy being up for sale to the highest bidder as per the Hunter Biden laptop.

But go ahead and go after Trump, we still have DeSantis. Who does the left have, Harris?

Voters already voted on these "issues" three weeks ago.
It seems to me that you should have gotten the message by now.
    The Liberals have the power.
And the Conservatives are in a very bad position to hope to implement their policy agenda any time soon.

Do you even understand the implications of what Sanders said. The the committee has decided to bring charges against persons and now they will decide what will be those charges and whom will be charged. In this country we normally know what is the charge if one is warranted before announcing people will be charged with something anything.

And of course his staff had to start walking in back as soon as it passed his lips

A Clarification From the Capitol Riot Committee
The chairman makes it even harder to take this work seriously.

Rep. Bennie Thompson, (D., Miss.), who defied the U.S. Constitution in 2005 by seeking to block certification of the re-election of President George W. Bush, is back in the news. No, Mr. Thompson is not denying legitimate election results again. But his Tuesday comments appear to represent yet another affront to constitutional governance.

Luke Broadwater reports for the New York Times:

The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol will issue criminal referrals to the Justice Department based on its inquiry, the panel’s chairman said on Tuesday, but has made no decision on who it will recommend charging or what offenses it will cite. Representative Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, the Democratic chairman of the committee, told reporters on Capitol Hill that the panel had agreed to take the step and would meet later Tuesday to discuss the specifics. But within moments, he and his staff rushed to clarify his statement, reflecting a debate that is still underway within the panel about whether to call for charges against former President Donald J. Trump and some of his top allies.

What was clearly needed was not a clarification but a retraction. Americans reasonably expect their government to identify a specific crime before suggesting charges. But it seems the “clarification” simply clarified the outrageous approach pursued by this sham committee which consists only of Democrats and Democrat-approved Republicans.

Mr. Broadwater of the Times continues:

“What we’ve decided is that we will probably make referrals,” Mr. Thompson told reporters a short time later.Mr. Thompson, who is known for giving big-picture guidance about the investigation but being at times less involved in the granular details of its work, then suggested that that decision was no longer in question.“There’s a general agreement we will do some referrals, but we’ve got to get there,” he said. “We’re not there yet.”.....

As I have said all along this was an unconstitutional congressional criminal investigation. The goal all along was to find alleged crimes in order to get people charged and prosecuted for them. What about the legislative purpose and proposed legislation? What about why the Capital Police did not have the backing the needed and the leadership at the Capital and the City and been unequivically advised they should have in place? Where is that investigation. Did you see the family of died by natural causes Officer Sicknick refuse to shake McConnells hand today supposedly because McConnel did not support this Jan 6 committee in the Senate. Excuse me Mr. Sicknick but it is Pelosi's hand you should not shake for allowing as the leader at the Capital the officers to be thrown under the bus that day and not provide that additional security they needed.

What is Garland going to have to say if this sham partisan committee actually finds "crimes" that his almost two year full blown biggest in it's history investigation could not find? What will that say about the FBI?

They don’t care. Just like in 2016 where the president didn’t win the majority of votes, and in 2018 where they lost the house, and in 2020 where they lost the presidency in a landslide along with the senate, and in 2022 where they gained a handful of seats in the house and probably lost a seat in the senate.

During that time they have instituted massive partisan gerrymandering, blocked a two term president from selecting a SCOTUS judge and forced through two hyper partisans from a twice impeached president that was immediately removed by the people.

They care about one thing and that is power. They will only get more extreme until the people say we have had enough and quell it. (Not through violence of course — that’s their game)

He is about as big a criminal as Hunter Biden, but nowhere near as corrupt as Joe. Can you find someone to run who isn't a total ****** and a criminal?

You guys are a pisser. Thousands of hateful violent liberals took over state and other government buildings in Wisconsin, Arizona, Portland, Washington, etc, while the left cheered them on and did you call them jihadists? I know, I know, you're dying to say it but I will say it for you: But that's different.

And it's strange how you used the word jihadists, I thought saying such things was racist.

    Big deal.

The release of this useless information means nothing, except it gives haters a chance to run with their wild speculation.

Seriously, what do we know from this news release? They say they are going to present criminal referrals to the DOJ. Do we know who these referrals are about? No. Do we know what they are about? No. Do we know if any of them are about Trump? No.

Yet, as we can see just from this forum, alone, people are making all manner of wild statements.

I suggest people dial back the stupid, baseless stuff and wait and see. Hell, nobody knows if those referrals will even be made public.

Much ado about nothing at all, at this point.

I would find it quite embarrassing were I him and I would hope our MSM, I'm sure he will avoid FOX and National Review and Wall Street Journal and other conservative news like the plague, would ask him how could that possibly be? Is his FBI and DOJ that incompetent that they could not find the evidence the President of the United States engaged in a conspiracy to overthrow the government of the United States and take over in some coup when a bunch of incompetent members of Congress did?

Do you recall how Harris fared in the primaries? Newsom is a far left progressive who hates white people; so much so that an article was recently written about it. But even his hatred of white people doesn't take into account how CA is only 5% black with a huge number of them in prison. Why is that? If anyone would proudly say he'd (it is he and not her, right?) open the borders, it would be him. No governor of a sanctuary state wins the presidency.

Ahhhh see above Thompson had to walk it back. It's in Russia that they decide to charge someone then come up with the charges, he had to be reminded of that.
