This is a bill which passed in the commons last night by one vote. It has now gone swiftly through the House of Lords, winning by 239 to 118. It demands that if we get to the point of No Deal the Government must ask the EU for more time. That is all well and good, except that the EU may not give it!!

In other news, Parliament has ended for the time being due to an apparent leak of water.

The EU would give it to keep the UK down.

No one is denying that No Deal would be extremely damaging on the UK. The well heeled Tories just hope they can make a bob or two out of it. The immediately worst damage will be to the sick and the most poor. The UK needs to come to a workable solution which is a soft Brexit. As I was listening to Varouvakis say last night we can begin with that and then people can carry on arguing about things and make further changes in future years if they want.

Meanwhile the fear over May intending on tricking the UK into acceptance of her deal is making people gather together to keep an eye on this.

Cross-party group fears PM will try to force through options without consulting MPs properly

I have never known there to be so little trust in the integrity of the Government of the UK as there is now, including from themselves and I hate to say it but it is deserved. 40 years ago people expected Parliamentarians to have integrity. Now they expect and get spin.

No deal with the EU means the UK and US can have a free trade deal.

Any deal even no deal, is better than a bad EU deal.

No deal would be a disaster for the UK and not good for the rest of the EU. I'm pretty sure they'll agree to a long extension, which suits me. Long enough to hold a confirmation vote, is all that's needed.

The rest of the EU already has problems that don't include the UK leaving it.
Greece, Germany, Freedom of Movement, Ireland.
To Hell with the rest of the EU. They're Hell bent on being a bloc of countries like the USSR was.

No deal means no deal with the EU, doesn't mean no deals for the UK free of the EU.
In fact, no deal with the EU allows a US UK trade deal for example.

    OH MY GOD ... :wall:

How stupid and arrogant and ignorant and unaware of the EU can someone actually be on the British Isles?

May today officially asked for an extension of the deadline until 30.06.2019.

    source (example):

    https://www.theguardian.com/politic...ill-tell-eu-to-back-brexit-flextension-for-uk

Quite apart from the fact that May of me only an extension until next Monday 8 clock in the morning with the condition "Deal or no deal and no answer is immediately no deal" would get ... just because my patience with these monkey heads of the British government and the British Parliament is completely exhausted....

On May 23, EU Parliamentary elections will be held, and if UK is still in the EU at the time, then UK must fully participate in these elections ...
And then the 30.06. Dead as deadline and ... if it is really evil, then UK remains the next 7 years member of the EU ... because so long is a legislative term of the EU Parliament!

Conclusion: The request and the date 30.06.2019 as a deadline extension are now what?

You may answer and rate it yourself!

It is looking like the EU may offer a flexible extension

    https://www.theguardian.com/politic...ill-tell-eu-to-back-brexit-flextension-for-uk

At the same time the Gov acknowledges it would hold EU elections if the UK had not left by 22 May.

Meanwhile Rees Mogg indicates that if there is a long extension and we end up in the next EU Parliament he will be getting people to disrupt business as much as possible

    https://twitter.com/LordAshcroft/status/1114100744653869056/photo/1?ref_src=twsrc^tfw|twcamp^tweetembed|twterm^1114100744653869056&ref_url=https://www.theguardian.com/politics/blog/live/2019/apr/05/brexit-latest-news-developments-live-theresa-may-writes-to-eu-requesting-another-article-50-extension-but-only-until-30-june-live-news

I am afraid if I was answering for the EU I would call an end on April 12th regardless of the reality this is what Mogg wants. People need to look after themselves first. If the UK can't act honourably.....

Hardly surprising response from the EU to Rees Mogg's banality

How come Rees-Mogg is saying we can do the likes of vetoing any increase in EU budgets, obstructing any moves towards the creation of an EU army and blocking what he described as French president Emmanuel Macron’s “integrationist schemes”. Thought the reason for leaving was because we had no power to stop the EU doing anything, (or maybe it was just no power to stop the EU Anti-Tax Avoidance Directive)?

Surely the Brexiteers didn't lie through their teeth every step of their campaign, did they? How come thinking people actually believed them?

Surely no one in the UK will agree to run in the EU elections provided the UK shuts up and plays ball with the EU.

What would be the point of being in the EU if the UK can't veto to get what UK wants?

The point of leaving was having London rule the UK and UK negotiating trade and customs with trading partners.
It's also about protecting the labour markets from otherwise illegal 'legal' EU migrants taking jobs from the locals.

When the results of the referendum were announced, nobody thought it meant anything but a hard brexit; No customs union, no freedom of movement, but a clean break for the UK to be independent of the EU.

Out of interest, how many local doctors and nurses are without jobs because EU citizens have taken them? And how many Health Service jobs are unfilled since this whole Brexit crapstorm started? And what do you mean have "London" rule the UK? Was that a Freudian slip.... shouldn't that be let the Westminster Parliament run the UK? Do you think anyone is going to want to talk trade with a government that changes its mind about what it wants every time the ERG opens its collective mouth?

When the results of the referendum was announced nobody KNEW what a hard Brexit meant...because sure as hell the wittering from Brexiteers gave the impression that it was going to be a case of the UK saying to the EU "Jump" and the EU saying "How high?" and a deal would be easy because the EU needs the UK. And now we have found out that nobody needs us, though they'd be happy enough if we got a rush of pragmatism to the two brain cells, which seem to be all our Government has among them, got their act together and worked out what it is we DO want.

I confess I could care less if devolved governments across the UK break down like in Northern Ireland, since UK has London.
I also like to remind you that doctors aren't unskilled jobs, so people qualified to be a doctor wherever they're from in the world should be welcome, and won't be displacing anybody.
But EU migrants are unskilled fork lift drivers, table bussing, car washing, house cleaners.
Why should unskilled workers in the UK have to have their jobs taken by someone who's uneducated and unskilled?

Nobody voted to remain in a customs union if they didn't vote Remain.

Leave won, so Hard Brexit is the only Brexit people expect.

We had to face facts like the PM's speech at Mansion House of looking beyond Europe for a Global Britain and keeping banks in City of London by proposing turning it into a tax haven.
    Any customs union isn't Brexit.

    Absolutely correct

I am beginning to think it is either going to be May giving a lot to Labour which must be backed up by Parliament or we will take back Article 50. That is anyway what May is saying. She is not saying No Deal or a Labour/May deal she is saying a Labour/May deal or no Brexit.

I notice Patrick Harvey is telling Nicola to get started on Indyref 2.

Yeah, because London Borough of Croydon's in the great state of Minnesota dontcha know. ;) Doing my best Minnesota accent for you.

But actually, we say what I say because I'm you and whatever I say is what we say get it?

If you don't get it, then maybe there's nothing to be got, or maybe you just don't get it, got it?

Maybe it's time the UK moved towards more Americanisms? (It's all good be it Britishism or Americanism)
Ever read that book 51st State?
In this 1998 story, UK leaves the EU then accidentally becomes an American State.

If the UK crashed out of the EU and into closer trade with the US, it's not the worst thing that could happen. (and anyone who says it is hates America and *******n you if you do).
If UK stays in the EU and EU distances itself from America, then one would wonder why follow Europe (who's done nothing for us) instead of America (who have). It's 2019, got a thing called aeroplanes, can fly to New York City quicker than you could drive to Amsterdam from London (granted 90 minutes of that drive is crossing the English Channel stuck on some boat).
Just saying, UK being in Europe is nice and all, but it doesn't mean the UK has to be in the EU or even be close to the EU when it could be close in this day and age to countries around the world instead of this bloc called the EU.
Having shipping come in from other places than Ireland or Calais, France etc from outside the EU is still shipping coming into the UK.

Given that you change your view for no reason, what you say means nothing to me. I do not know why diamondlil said you were American but when I notice you speak American English rather than English English and when the rest of your posting shows no consistency, I'll go with that. It makes no difference to me anyway. You have moved from someone who apparently hated 'racism' to someone apparently despising everyone except a feigned liking of the English.. Now I have more important things to think of than your games.

This morning we have Peter Oborne, who is being touted as a leading Brexiteer, having a rush of common-sense to his brain. Shame he's a journalist and not a member of the ERG.
    https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/op...ow-we-must-swallow-our-pride-and-think-again/

I hope we do have indyref#2 before the next Scottish election.....but only if there is a good chance of winning. Pleased to see Harvie urging...and not demanding for once. You do have to laugh at the Scotland in Union numpties with their "A wildcat Catalan-style referendum would be even more reckless, with no legal basis.”., though. Doesn't need a legal basis...we aren't an integral region of England under any constitution, as is the situation with Catalonia and Spain. Nothing stopping us having a properly conducted and supervised consultative referendum to gauge support...and if there is a majority, nothing stopping us from using that as proof for the international community...and Westminster...that independence is the choice of the Scottish people. After all, we now have a precedence in the Brexit referendum as it was only consultative...not "legal" or "binding" but there was a rush at a rate of knots to implement that as "the will of the people"...even if it was only the will of the people of England and Wales.
