Hacking and demanding ransom for restoration is on the increase, and the hackers are finding their crimes pay well AND they are protected by living in countries that are adversarial to the US. So what's to be done?

How's this: Most of those countries have assets in the US. Suppose, upon the event of such an attack and demand for ransom, the assets of the country where the attack was launched are locked down and a portion of the assets are taken for payment of the hackers' ransom demands? What's the negative downside?

What would happen when they realize that? It might work one or two times but they will just circumvent that obstacle.

I don't see how we could ever put in a legal system that holds a countries responsible for crimes conducted by it citizens. Would we be willing as a country to pay for a damages caused by US citizens? What would be the impact of the gangs, organized crime etc... If a US citizen transports drugs or guns across the Canadian border should the US be held responsible for all of the damages caused by that criminal activity?

I wish there were better way to force other countries to crack down on their cyber criminals. I wouldn't start with hackers/ransom groups I would like to see the phone and computer scams prioritized first. These scammer are impacting millions of Americans with there stupid calls and fake viruses and online scams. They have limited success but it hurts the most vulnerable part of society often seniors who are not tech savvy.

For those not familiar with the issue I suggest watching Jim Browning's you tube channel. The guy is a modern day Robin Hood. He videos are great and it will give you an idea of the scope of the scammers. Buy the guy a coffee!

Proof that the crime originated when and where we say it happened seems to be the biggest obstacle.

Beyond that, the companies who are hit don't always cooperate.

Forcing the companies to realize it is in their best interests to have capable backup plans seems to be the best route.

Offer Elon Musk a grant to fix the problem. He never turns down government money.

Special forces visiting them late at night? Anyone threatening our infrastructure is a terrorist and should be dealt with in the most extreme manner.

Back up data, establish federal standards for strategic industries.

Make it illegal to pay ransomware in the strategic industries and publish the list.

Ban cryptocurrency in America or make it trackable in some way.

Increase sanctions on safe harbor countries.

There won't be any solutions, because the media is comprised of liars suffering from trump derangement syndrome. This dude asserted that Trump said we should 'go back' to 'paper' even though the video he posted contradicts that assertion. It's fake. Similarly, we have a media that still blames Russia for the Solar Winds cyber-attack, even though Microsoft has determined it was China. You can't come up with a solution to the problem when Democrats are actively defending China, because they don't want to admit that Trump's was correct about the Solar Winds culprit. A major issue with ransom-ware attacks is that Chinese spies, operatives and hackers keep exposing large vulnerabilities that individual hackers can exploit for monetary gain.

If we're just targeting the ransom-ware, then regulating or banning cryptocurrency would be a functional solution, but it's not viable given the resistance that's likely to arise from financially-interested cryptocurrency investors. You actually need to gather a large, bipartisan political movement, but that's not going to happen without acknowledging the China cyber espionage.

Perhaps it's as simple as stopping stupid human tricks who fall for responding to phishing emails that allow folks to penetrate their networks... I know, too much to ask... but dang. If the 14 yo in the basement inhaling hot pockets is from south new jersey, are we saying that the rest of the world should freeze all of the US's assets?

This, hard to truly prove the source, most is speculation and it has been shown some of these hacker organizations are beyond borders(as in members in multiple nations).

I think a proctologist would be needed to find the true source.

The video you provided clearly demonstrates that Trump didn't make those statements, so obviously you pulled it out of your own ass.

The solution is for companies to physically isolate their critical systems from the public network.

We need to VASTLY improve our security nd STOP paying ransoms which only encourages the criminals. And much better detection of the crimes if they have already occurred. And very severe sentences for anyone caught doing it.

Personally, I advocate treating them like the terrorists that they are and calling in the drone strikes.

    Make good back-ups.
Make sure you don't get hacked.

Not being able to know who gets paid crypto currency is a key reason why criminals want to use it. The US might want to resolve that issue.

It sounds illegal, and it opens pandor's box of tit for tats, where Americans themselves could get tossed in prison to extort the US government.

But we are willing to prosecute and extradite those Americans who commit those crimes. The countries being referred to are not. They are complicit.
