These people are not used to having much cash. Guess how long it will take them to show up dead broke? https://www.yahoo.com/news/philando-castile-family-reaches-3m-settlement-death-125508539.html Philando Castile family reaches $3M settlement in death
Not really knowing anything about the family, that's tough to guess, but if you go by the average of lotto winners, you're talking about 3 years or so before the family is broke again.
So, Government commits a tort, pays off the victim, who is then victimized by lawyers and Goverment? As I suggest, they will soon be broke. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2016/01/why_do_70_percent_of_lottery_w.html
I'm not against the family getting some money in compensation, due to the lost income they won't be receiving from the one who was killed. But 6 million??? We've basically turned the legal system into a lottery. Why is it that every time I read about wrongful tort compensation, it's either a pittance that barely compensates the victim, or it's some massive lottery winnings that were obviously undeserved? And you can't provide fair compensation to an individual who is already dead. They are dead. They are the one who would have deserved that money, not any of their family members. In my opinion, the only money that should be given to the family members is to compensate them for financial hardship that will suffered due to loss of one of the parent's income or childcare costs for a stay-at-home mom, funeral costs in the case of a child.
