In Palm Bay FL a few years ago, an elephant went nuts at a carnival. Officers emptied 9mms and 357s into the animal with out it even flinching.
One officer finally made it to his car and pulled out a 30.06 hunting rifle if I remember right and downed it.

There was one in Honolulu in the late 80's. Local LE had nothing bigger than .223. The poor beast took over 1,000 rounds of 9mm and several hundred of .223 before it finally bled out.

The article to which you were responding was, predictably , written by another tiresome individual with the same tiresome "EVILGUNSGONNAGITCHA" anti-Gun bias and seems Off-Topic on a thread involving firearms, their optics, history etc.

    “A CRUSADE FOR GUN CONTROL”
    http://www.usnews.com/news/the-repo...washington-whispers-a-crusade-for-gun-control
EXCERPT “Welcome to #GunFail, blogger David Waldman's two-year (and counting) Twitter project documenting daily unintentional shootings among legal gun owners in America. While the circumstances are at times comical – people shooting themselves with guns in their pockets, for example – Waldman's point is serious: he aims to refute pro-gun arguments about how guns are safe, how most owners are responsible and how only bad guys should fear them.”CONTINUED

My sentiments about firearms ownership are similar to those concerning abortion: If you don't want one, simply don't own / have one.

I don't feel that it is my right to tell other individuals how to manage their lives. Since it has proven impossible to legislate human behavior, let Darwin's Law sort them out.

On that note, many of us who were "Sniper Qualified" in military service or not with 20 year old eyes are now several times that age in civilian life but still enjoy the sport of target shooting & the science of ballistics. We are only different from dart throwers, pool players & golfers in the inanimate objects we use for our sports, all of which can be effective weapons. I once witnessed a terrible pool player kill 3 people with a pool cue in a bar-room brawl & a 9 iron will easily dispatch any human intruder or predator.

On an On-Topic note, more & more target shooters etc have turned to Red- Dot sights, magnifiers & related optics.

My recent experience & that of several others has been that while there may be very slightly better Red-dot sights & magnifiers on the market, Vortex® Red Dots are, perhaps among the best values (around the $200- range).

I have never "plugged for" a product & have no motive other than fulfill the spirit of this Thread & pass on information as I have benefited from information gained reading other Firearms Forums.

On S&W's entry level AR platforms, you can easily co-witness* your standard iron sights with the Red Dot, or, after about 400 hours, the battery dies, you can still use your iron sights with the Red Dot in place.

AS enjoyable as the new "Bells & Whistles" may be, it's still a happy day when you can accomplish 1 1/2 - 2 M.O.A. with an old, C&R** rifle by keeping the Bullseye in the center of the blur.

I hope some of this information may have been helpful

    * use together

** C&R: Curio & Relic ; The ATF offeres a type of Firearms licence that allows lawful individuals to buy older, wholesale firearms through the mail. The license is only $30- & valid for 3 years. C&R firearms include a wide range of rifles, pistols & revolvers. They include bolt action rifles, black powder antiques & many semi-automatic rifles & pistols: (SKS, M1, SVT-40 etc rifles, WW 2 Walther P-38s, Lugers, Colt Mod 1911 .45 ACPs, Tokarevs, Makarovs,) Additionally, C&R license holders receive discounts on some ammunition, magazines etc. You may trade & sell these firearms but not as a business

I'd vote for it. That way the liberals won't have to suffer the gun talk or we won't have to suffer the "shaming" from liberals for having or wanting a certain gun or gun related product.

This is the sort of thing I want to see in a gun discussion thread:
    TRAINING
This is just about the most interesting, yet daunting aspect of shooting for me.
I don't like to train any more than I think is practical. You could dream up "what if" scenarios unto infinity, and work out a training regimen for each one, if you had that much time and ammo. I don't.
Point shooting has become attractive to me of late. In my little array of "what ifs", a very redundant requirement is to mount an intimidating and hopefully, overwhelming conter-attack as quickly as possible. Invariably, this means that I gain control of my gun as fast as I can, and start delivering effective fire, even before I have time to acquire a sight picture. It already gets daunting.
I only have 9mm Glock pistols. If all I'm doing is holding the gun straight out in front of me, lining up the sights on the target, and firing with both hands, there is little difference between the G26 and the G17L. In that regard, training with one counts toward training with any of them. But bad guys don't stand there, waiting for you to settle in.
Point shooting with the 26 is a delight. I draw the gun and rack the slide as I'm turning toward some close-in target, then fire as I gain sight of it. Corrections in aim happen as fast as my eye sees the hit, and I can get the first 3 shots out in about a half second, with one or two hitting, and the third one a maybe.
Moving up to the G19, it's almost the same, but the gun feels noticably bigger, with a more deliberate effort made to correct for the next shot. It's still similar enough so that training with one counts toward time and ammo spent with the other.
Moving up to the G17, it's just not the same. The slide is "bigger enough" to throw everything out. I tend to fire the next shot before my correction is complete.
At that point, I think that trying to apply the coordination gained with the smaller pistols is a bridge too far. It's like driving. You can get really good at doing tricky stuff with a 2,500 lb. car. Move up to a 3,500 lb. car, and those tricks don't work. There are other tricks, but they require a whole different curriculum.
This is where I look (*)(*)(*)(*)-eyed at guys who say they carry different guns on different days. Maybe those guys are different from me. I just don't see how anyone can go from the smallest Springfield .45 on one day, and carry a full sized 1911 on another day, and expect to be as prepared on both days.
Training is expensive and time consuming. There are different things to consider, so that even the best have to prioritize on what they think is most likely to happen. I fire between 200 and 500 rounds a month through my Glocks. I'm competent, but far from expert.
How do some of you other guys do it? What do you concentrate on? How many rounds do you figure you'd have to fire to be satisfied that you're "good enough"?

Rack the slide ? why ? was the chamber empty ?

Yup. It works for the IDF, and it works for me. If there's no round in the chamber, it's impossible to shoot yourself in the manner that is far too common with Glocks. There was some famous sports guy who recently neutered himself that way.
I've thought about carrying with a round chambered. For about a year, I left all of my Glocks cocked, but unchambered, just to see if I would have that kind of ND. It didn't happen, but I still don't trust it.
Consider that if you carry a 1911 pattern gun, you still have to disengage the safety. If your gun has a decocker, you still have to move that. It's no more of a hindrance then, to rack the slide on a Glock. If you train that way, it becomes "natural".
There's a LOT of discussion about carrying with a round chambered or not. Pick a side.

Just so all are aware, we haven't abandoned the idea for a separate gun forum. The proposal was brought to the site owner months ago but we have yet to receive a response.

So the idea as of now is still on the table.

What I originally said on the topic.

And yet, even before it starts it turns into a silly bash fest for political ideologies.

I am often accused of being a liberal. Not what I would necessarily characterize myself, but it is what others call me.

I also hunt and enjoy plinking along with other shooting activities.

So what does liberal have to do with anything in regards to shooting sports? Can folks not simply enjoy something without it turning into (insert politcal party here) sucks?

So? I needed help with the "big thing" at that point too. True story here:
My dad had taken me with him, deer hunting near the CO. border in Utah. We had been camping since I was housebroke, so when I woke up on that morning, he had already been gone for a little while, up some gorge.
He was closing in on a little buck. It was already nervous. From fr away, it heard me yelling out: "Daddy!! I gotta' make ah-ah!" The deer trotted over the next hill, and daddy came back to help.
Stalking in close to the deer was part of the hunt, because he was carrying his Ruger .44 Mag. Deerstalker carbine. I fired that carbine for the first time on that trip. I looked up at him and said: "Next year, daddy".
That was also the first year I started driving. My dad was a bit of a wacko that way, but he was obsessed with getting me up to speed to be his knockin' around buddy.

This is correct. What those affiliated with liberal ideologies do not like, is that the vast majority of the public is able to possess firearms just as they are.

    Going political again here...
I think a big reason why the perception that you present is more common now is because fewer people are ever able to experience the sporting, outdoor use of guns.
One morning last week, dawn has just broken, and I was standing in an open place, waiting for my cab to be fueled. The air was just brisk, with a light breeze, at about 45 degrees.
For a brief 2 minutes, my mind drifted off to days of adventure, headed out in the desert, and carrying a .22 rifle in pursuit of rabbits.
I wouldn't care if the rest of the whole world had guns, and the same chance to do the same thing.

Liberal ideology ? It means respecting individuality and allowing people to determine their own destiny and protecting their right to do so. It also means, you get to keep your Medicare and SS whether you like guns or not. Lastly, liberals respect your right to be uninformed too; especially thinking the vast majority of the public owns guns.

There is little to any truth in what you have said. Those who are affiliated with the liberal side of politics have little to no respect for individual rights. Attorney general Loretta Lynch is currently involved in discussions with the FBI to determine if there is legal authority to bring charges against those who deny that climate change is real. President Barack Obama stated over and over that if the people liked their insurance plan then they would be allowed to keep it, only for them to be cancelled. The majority of the united states public is required under penalty of law to have health insurance even if they do not want it, do not need it, or cannot afford it. All of these points have been documented by the news media as being actual events that have happened, or currently are happening.

What of this matches the statement that you have made?

You guys have a great way of trying to say others are wrong....but never saying exactly what it is.

Individual rights. Try the ACLU which fights for your due process rights and right to be wrong.
Generally speaking, if you don't believe in climate change, it's OK if you are ill informed and uneducated. But, you can't as an institution tell lies to prop your story and profit off it. It's like trying to sell a harness to hold you up to keep you from falling of a flat earth. That's the gist. You can act as an individual how ever you want. I would not expect you to believe in climate change. You have said enough to prove your point.

Health insurance ? You never have to enroll. You are not breaking any law if you don't. Wrong again sparky. You get fined but if you want, you can completly avoid the fine and it's non collectible if you pay your taxes. It's just taken out of your returns if you overpay. Anymore untruths you needs dispelled sparky. Your news media is Faux and they are always wrong. The reason is simple. Everyone who may need emergency care and get it for nothing without insurance is a dredge on the rest of us. You are just paying for that emergency room privilege ahead of time. Life goes on.

And what about matters pertaining to suicide? Where does the liberal party stand on someone wishing to end their life? Is it not their decision to make, and thus no business of government to say otherwise?
