Thats an interesting point on brass elongation with the CM. Since I also trim every piece and brass is cheaper in .308 its probably not a major point but who knows.

I've wondered about barrel life with a 6mm cartridge, and also I'd like to retain the capability to take larger game. A .243 is certainly fine for deer, but I wonder how well it works at longer ranges.

The 308 works fine for smaller big game such as whitetail deer and small wild pigs.

If you could only have one rifle for home defense or hunting the Socom 16 is a good choice.

For hunting alone that is way too much ammo though.

But if you want to use the same ammo for both, get a bolt action 308 and also the Socom and then you can use the same ammo in both.

I don't know if these modern Socom's have the same problem as the M-14's had with cook-off's in the magazine. I hope not. If so just keep your loads light.

Once each month I have a practice day devoted to my 45ACP.

First I unload it and put dummy rounds in it and check the action and cycling of the mag.

Then with dummy rounds to protect the firing pin I practice my draw-and-shoot in front of the mirror.

Damn I'm bad looking !!

Then I reload it and chamber it and put it into Condition #2 and head for the indoor range.

Then I crank off about a box of ammo practicing mostly at 5 yards -- close fast shooting.

Then I'll practice a few 10 yards hostage rescue shots. Last time this went perfectly and my groups were all nearly touching, on both the left and right side of the hostage's silhouette, dead center in the bad guy's skull.

Then I'll reload and head home.

The rest of the evening I clean and reassemble the pistol, with my shotgun next to me as my backup while cleaning. That is a good training day, for me.

The 6 cm certainly seems to have a shorter barrel life compared to the 6.5, and there isn't much that can touch a 308 for longevity.

A new $300-$400 barrel once or twice a year is not much money to someone who'd shoot competitively at that level. I'm not one of them.

There are some really high BC 6mm bullets out there, and they can be pushed hard enough to stay supersonic at 1000 yds with low recoil so you can see your hits.

Very true, you can't overstate the importance of spotting hits at long range.

 

Hits or misses? I once had a Savage 22-250, the only left handed action I have owned. Had to replace the barrel once. It was a very flat shooting and accurate gun with the scope Which one lost to memory now) but I made money for school shooting prairie dogs at distance, $5 per pair of ears. It was accurate , but with commercial ammo I had at the time, not great in wind. It would take a couple shots to get on target when I found a colony (they never seemed to flinch much), then $ time. Wow, memories from long ago....good days those.

 

Even misses hit something, and see g that impact allows correction for elevation or windage. I'm shooting a Savage 10T with a Burris XTR II in 6.5 Creedmoor for long range. Best 5 shot group at 100 yards was .454, and a three shot group with factory 143 gr ELD-X was .333

 

Wind will get you. Its my sweetest downfall.

I got a rabbit at 80 yards yesterday, with a .033bc pellet at 850 fps. Enought time to consider the break before I recovered from the recoil (none) of a HPA air rifle.

I know well what its like to need money for school.

Id like to try for p dogs but its too dry here in california.

I also shoot .223 at long range for groups, but I'd love to shoot 22-250 for realz.

Bullets will miss as fast as you can drop em.

But damn I love a good shooting centerfire.

 

It's been around 40 yrs since and I don't remember what gr bullet I was using, but I thin I was shooting Remington Factories. I do seem to remember having to try a few, or at least a couple different rounds before settling. Wind was alway an issue at distance and if variable or gusting... we'll a challenge. I think most of my shooting was in the 200-400 range.
I do remember, that a hit created a red mist explosion on the little critters. Funny, one than that stands out in my memory, after getting one, others would come up and investigate, standing up, looking for the threat...oops. I could sometimes take a few before they would disappear for a bit. I was 19... it was the only time I ever consumed alchohol when shooting... I'd take a six with me when waiting on that long ridge watching over the colonies in the aligning it in fields below. I do remember shooting a coyote (for a bounty) that was making the rounds between them and remember being surprised that it took to shots, the first through the chest, and second, broadside through the heart to kill it and even that second shot didn't immediately drop him (don't remember exactly, but would suspect 250-300 yrds). It was great on varmits and though I had heard of people hunting Whitetail with that round, I never considered it... given that coyote, not sure I'd have trusted it; might be better rounds these days, but still wouldn't.
Btw, I do remember trying my hand hitting them with the Sharps 45/110 I had. It was like attilery practice without the terminal effects of close hits. But, it would make the critters vanish with a near hit...Lol.

 

Now it's 76 to 9.

You are more than welcome to try and accomplish either feat. However emotional responses such as embarrassment and anger are not experienced on the part of myself, as they are irrelevant.

The discussion is not available because a sub-forum reserved for discussing only the mechanical issues of firearms does not yet exist. That is the purpose of this particular discussion, to determine if there is enough support from the community to warrant the creation of such.

Do try and keep up with what is actually being discussed.
