I Got A Job

    I got a job at Dollar General. Originally as a part-time cashier, literally in three work days I was promoted to "third manager" and everyone else apart from the manager and the assistant manager was below me, including all the people who trained me in those three short days- I am now their boss.

    Why? I have no freaking idea. But I do know I showed up every day early for my shift and I was ready to work... as an opening cashier I was hounding the management for more work apart from register.

    I have all my teeth, I speak correctly and politely and respectfully to the customers; I am well dressed and shaven and clean and good-smelling. But above all else, I am ready for more; I am here to work.

    The management has taken a shine to me for my efforts- even though it's only been there 3-4 work days they have quickly promoted me. I am now a manager-in-training, under the head manager's supervision, and after three days on the register graduated from that apparently dead-end position.

    Kudos to free enterprise- I am well on my way and the manager is already talking about when I have my own store to manage- two weeks into employment.

    These days I watch and see cashiers come and go as I do my manager-in-training job. The next week I will be in training and the week after that I will be officially third manager- working full time with a huge bump in salary and health benefits... they are handing it all to me.

    I am amazed at the oppourtunity available to hard-working people in the free market- considering I was a pothead, out of work loser two weeks ago- two years from now I will manage my own store earning a salary, not an hourly job!

    I would like to make sense of this all- I went from a total loser to a leader-of-men within two weeks. It's too much for me to absorb-

    it is a testament to how desperate employers are to find decent workers...and a condemnation of the current work ethic of so many Americans.

    Perhaps. I will give you that. That quality of employee cashiers is rather low.

    I think that I am speaking for just about all here when I say don't take anything for granted. Just keep on doing what you are doing and learn as much as you can. There might be a good career opportunity there for you. best of luck to you.

    So much for those low-paying, go-nowhere jobs, huh?

    Congrats, jmpet! Sounds like you've found your niche. I know a lot of people who make a good living in retail mgmt. The hardest part of the job is supervising the do-nothings you get stuck with. Here's hoping you luck out & get a crew of workers just like you!

    There are very few actual "dead end" jobs out there.

    Hope you have a good career ahead of you in your time there jmpet.

    I live in a small isolated town. The next town that has stores etc. is 10 miles away. I always wanted to work at Dollar General because it's one mile from my home ans is walking distance if need be. I applied once and nothing. I applied the second time and they called me back.

    What amazes me is the potential they see in me- potential I don't see in myself. I mean, three days into work and I am promoted to manager? They have people who have been there 5+ years and are still cashiers.

    When they hired me, they put me on a 15 hour work week. Whoop-dee-doo- I make $100 a week at minimum wage. I was kinda cool with it- it would give me lots of leisure time but they quickly offered me more work for more pay and more hours and what the hell- who wouldn't jump on that?

    I have always had the potential to work hard- have decades of it under my belt but this was a chance to get back into the game- I guess I was in a funk for a long time. Part of it is the dismal employment oppourtunities out there which discouraged me from trying hard... or not wanting to have to drive 25 miles for $7.25 an hour. But the job is right here and the pay is good and the work is doable.

    I consider myself fortunate or even lucky- I didn't expect this to happen. But it did and I am greatful. The manager is already telling me about "when you have your first store..." etc... and it's really cool to hear there is a chance to build a career out of nothing.

    I hope this encourages others to get out, work hard and earn your money.

    Congrats. One of the things I learned when I started my own business is that it is ALL YOU. Your success is up to you. You don't have to have a lot of money to start a business or to become a success. If you want to be successful you have to love what you do and put your best foot forward, whether if you are a worker or a business owner. You have to get out there and do the foot work. Success doesn't come to you, you have to go to success. I really love and enjoy business and by running my own business, I can look back to my days when I worked as an employee in the private sector and see where I messed up when during those times I could not see it.

    Your reputation as a worker or business owner is very important and if you work hard and do a good job, it helps to market yourself for better opportunities and new customers (if you are a business owner). Do a bad job and word quickly spreads and many opportunities will close the door on you. But it's up to you, if you really want to succeed. If you want a promotion, you have to go after it and show you have earned it. If you want to start a business, you got to get appropriate business licenses in your city or county and then hit the road talking to your target market. If you want more customers, you got to get out there, shake hands with people, market, do good work and develop a good reputation. EVERYBODY is in sales and marketing and it's important that you keep this in mind as you work. In the end, it's up to you. I am happy you are having success. Keep up the good work and you will have more opportunities open up to you.
