While taking a long shuttle ride from Detroit airport to a small Canadian city, friendly conversations are common. These was some talk of politics, and a Canadian man asked, "What do you Americans think of what is going on in America now?" The lady next to me answered, "I love my country, and we have wonderful people... but I am embarrassed by and deeply ashamed of my government". That statement silenced everybody for a few moments, Canadians and Americans alike. Then, Americans began to nod and agree, some hanging their heads in the acknowledgement that they also felt the same way. I found this a telling moment, and I think it's a question that all of us should ask- and I think the answer is very relevant to the question of what we support and will tolerate from our leaders. Personally, I've had all the embarrassment and shame I'm willing to tolerate. How about you?
Me? I don't particularly care for the people either. You know, the ones that elected the embarrassing government. I think we ceased being a country some time ago. Our nation is little more than a collection of special interests that live in geographical proximity. There is actually no country to love, anymore. This situation is what liberals call "diversity" and think is a good thing. Last night, the Democratic speakers all called for us to come and work together. What a laugh!
Yes, that's why we started the Tea Party. And the last two Republicans standing were outsiders. I think we're well on our way to breaking the mold. The Democrats? They got a way to go yet.
I agree. The Trump/Sanders phenomenon is the embodiment of the sentiment described in the OP. Not that either of them would be 'less embarrassing', but that The People are no longer content with our governance and are rejecting the status quo for something different.
I think you misinterpreted the silence for unbelief. They were probably asking to know what you were thinking of the lunatic man child Trump and what the Republican Party has become. When the lady instead said she was ashamed of the government the Canadians cried inside.
I'm ashamed over the fact that Trump and Hillary are the best that the DNC and RNC have to offer and embarrassed over those who voted for either.
I feel hopeful. Had we taken their pick, Jeb!, I would feel similar shame. The DNC should have allowed a fair contest between Hillary and Bernie. By what right do they rig everything? Bernies in Philadelphia. "Capitalism as an idea is unsustainable, says a man named Xander, as he sits in the grass outside of a third tent city. (At this tent city, journalists are asked to prove they are not policemen by eating a non-GMO peach, for reasons that are unclear because at this point our notes just read, Guy without beard says, A Snickers bar does not equal the Taj Mahal. Peach eaten.)" https://www.washingtonpost.com/life...cea2aa-5293-11e6-b7de-dfe509430c39_story.html
Highly doubt he's voting for a criminal. Although it's hard to want to vote for a moron. What's left if Gary Johnson.
