What they call assault weapons are just semi automatic rifles that have certain cosmetic features such as barrel shrouds, adjustable stocks, pistol grips, bayonet lugs, ect. that might make it look like its something used in the army although it isn't. In the army they use full automatics or burst fire weapons which are generally not available to the public.

Oh please, OK lets go through a quick check list to see which of these items do you take responsibility for self regulating. You can respond identifying which ones you take responsibility for as opposed to delegating responsibility to the governments and agencies responsible. Do you personally set standards for; - what goes into the processed food you buy at the supermarket?; - the manner in which fresh food products are transported, stored and displayed in your local shops and how long they are allowed to remain on sale before disposal; - the safety features built into the cars you drive the planes you fly on; - the amount of lead in the fuel that powers them and the presence or not of catalytic converters; - the materials used in the construction of your house and all the consumer goods in it? - the connection of your property to public utilities including electricity, sewerage and gas? etc etc You see the thing is I'm pretty like me you've acquiesced to the State making decisions about these kind of things on your behalf - for the betterment and safety of the community as a whole. I mean I suppose you could choose to take responsibility for disposing of your own waste and dam the government for telling how you do it because its yours and you own it! But I have to say electing to to disconnecting from the public sewer system and digging a drop toilet in the back yard is probably going to annoy the neighbors a tad. Not to mention the public health issues that might crop up if everyone else decides to tag along and dig their own. My point is this. Why is suggesting a mandatory reduction in size of soda portions because consumption of soda is a major contributor to obesity in the US (true) a infringement of anyone's rights? It doesn't stop people from drinking soda after all, it just encourages them to drink less. How is this one issue different from all of the above? Obesity, like smoking and alhohol consumption etc is a major public health issue in the West, so why nitpick this one issue as (apparently) being an important reason to criticize Bloomberg. I mean if that's really is the most serious policy objection anyone on this forum has with his proposed election platform the man should probably be made President for life tomorrow. In reality? I think some people are just looking for a reason, any reason to attack Democrat candidates no matter how ridiculous that issue is. And, given the above this one is ridiculous.
