We have a few car people here I am sure. I plan to post some of the cars I have owned and driven and tell a short story. Please show a car you owned and tell your story. Thanks to all contributors. I am not starting in a particular order. (1938 Packard Super 8 Convertible ) This Packard I owned was dark green. It had a rumble seat. That is for 2 more passengers. This means it carried 2 in the front, 2 behind those two and 2 behind all of them for 6 in total. I took my car to a football game in San Jose one time and filled the car that way. Some features were at the grill: It was movable. As it warmed up. the grill opened up and would close back as it cooled down. Parked and cold, it was shut tight. it has the 8 cylinder straight 8 that was a huge engine. I got rid of mine as a trade in for a 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air in 1956. Packard had a electric overdrive in my car. It had a standard 3 speed transmission. It had a huge amount of torque but not a lot of horsepower. I believe my car had 130 horsepower and compare that to the 165 horsepower in the 1956 chevrolet v8. Later I removed the engine from my Chevrolet and it ended up having at least 225 horsepower. As fast as it was in the 1/4 mile, perhaps more than that power. It would get to 98 miles per hr in 1/4 mile. The following is taken from a internet source and it claims the overdrive was not on the 1938. I know for a fact it was since my car came with it.
My father used to build cars until he got sick. These were his favorite. I could have sworn he was going to give it to me, he even let me drive it. Some guy walking by offered him 20k for it and he sold it. I don't think I will ever forgive him for that. These were his second favorite to build.
I favor the Camaro. I owned two 34 Ford PU trucks but did not have the money to cherry them out like that one is. Inside they were not very comfortable but they are fan favorites.
That wasn't his actual car but they looked like that but he built hot rods. He said he could build a Camaro that could beat a motorcycle in a 1/4 mile. Now I don't know anything about that but he took me for a ride once and taped a 100 to the dash board and said if you can grab it in 10 seconds it's yours. I couldn't.
There now are some seriously fast motorcycles. But of course some of the Camaros built for drag racing are much faster than most think they are. Your dads car was very quick.
Yeah when he got back from Vietnam he spent all of his time building cars, his first Camaro was bright orange and super fast. Mom made him give it up though because he spent all of his time with it. It wasn't until he was in his 60's and long divorced that he took it up again. I told him once that the reason I have to date guys with cars is because he would never build me one and do you know what he said? He said, "I'm glad for turning you out, Fancy". I still have no idea what that means.
All I know about the quarter mile & the 10 sec. thing came from the original F&F - those awkward puberty years w/ Paul Walker on the big screen, lol...
Those were just creepy old men to me. They weren't even that hot and their cars sucked. I didn't like that movie. I was 5 years old when that movie came out.
Nice rig Robert. I’d love to take one of those for a spin...I once owned a ‘54 Chevy 2 door with three on the tree. Bought it for $250 in ‘69. Wish I still had it.
I owned a black 2 dr 1950 Chevrolet for a short time. I took in as trade a cherry 1948 4 dr Chevrolet and cash. The Packard was known as America's Rolls Royce by some apparently. At the time, that was not on my mind. The car has the classic good looks. Found it too expensive to operate.
Definitely can play. My very first car was a pick up made by Ford. This PU is in nicer condition than mine was. My Dad gave it to me but swapped the first one for a different (same make and model Ford PU) for some reason i don't recall.
Jay Leno has some interesting youtube presentations. This is one of them. This is about the vaunted Duesenberg. I have only seen them in the auto museum in Reno, Nevada. Jay Leno explains it so think in these terms. The Ford had maybe 60 horsepower. This car has at least 350 horsepower and has modern features though built in 1928. Double overhead cams, 4 valves per cylinder. A lot won't appreciate this until checking up what others had at the time.
This was my first car in high school in 1966. $300 for a 56 Chevy. My second vehicle I bought after returning from Nam. Something like $1,000 for a 64 VW bus. I went a little nuts after getting discharged from the "crotch" Marine Corps and paid $1,200 for a 56 Harley panhead Not wanting to end up in prison I bought a pickup truck 57 Chevy Apache Then I discovered I had to hold down a real job and pay taxes so I bought a 67 Chevy Impala
Excellent cars to have owned and enjoyed. My first new car was my 1956 Chevrolet Bel Aire and it was the hardtop too. Red and white vs your turquoise and white. I also later had a 56 Chevrolet 210 2 dr coupe. Hauled guys to work in the hopped up beast. They did not appreciate the very loud exhaust.
