Most state have a process to potebpntialky get rights restored if a non violent felon.
I have an aquaintance in Alaska with a felony conviction allowed to carry a shot gun or black powder rifle. He carries a Navy 1851 .44 black powder Coltfor personal protection, one of the best pointing pistols in my opinion. Laws do vary state to state.

Yeah, I lost my shot, (because I'm fiscally conservative... & because, face it, I'm a 2x felon) after my second strike....

It's cool though. I've fallen back in love with Bow hunting.... And I only carry when I know that if I don't, I might die.... My old neighborhood was called "Little Beiruit" back in the day..... Anyway, should I ever win the lotto, I might just get my mouthpiece to help get me a pardon.....

Once a person has served his sentence and paid his debt to society, I don't see why he shouldn't have the same rights as everyone else.

If he's too dangerous to be trusted with the same firearm the rest of us are trusted with, then he should not be walking free in society, as he could use any number of alternative weapons.

Much depends on whether a conviction was for a violent offfense. The following summarized rights restoration processes by state...

    https://www.nacdl.org/ResourceCenter.aspx?id=25091

If I am not mistaken Alaska allows certain restoration of long guns, principally black powder and slot gun not long after release because of the need for protection from dangerous animals.

First of all, I'm not in favor of the proliferation of non-violent felonies. It blurs the line.

Secondly, I'm not in favor of punitive justice but rather compensatory justice. That means that that rather than the victim pay for the perpetrator being locked up, the victim is repaid by the perpetrator.

Lastly, I'm not in favor of any free person's rights (regardless of their past crimes) being abrogated. If there is someone who is so dangerous that he can't be trusted to carry a firearm like the rest of us, then he should be locked up for life, or until he no longer presents a danger, or exiled.

As far as I know, restoration of Rights on Federal cases is stalled at the present, ie
    "Relief from disability"...
Some State cases can be expunged.
    There are various stipulations.
I helped a freind do just that, a case of Assault lll circa1976....
    Success...

    Kinda my point.
Why do we let dangerous felons out of prison on the assumption they will commit more crime?

where do you get off saying "you"

your solution is to pass stupid laws trying to criminalize gun ownership

gun control has always been an excuse by the left to pretend its doing something about crime while doing everything possible to avoid being tougher on REAL criminals

Why are republican states so soft on crime and keep letting these people out of prison?

They are continually opposed by the Dems who see application of the law as racist.

Since many GOP states control the governor and both houses.....I wonder who they blame their soft on crime stance on? Lol

as I have noted, and there are several scholarly papers on this available on the web, Nixon's southern strategy caused the Democrat party to adopt gun control as a method of pretending the DNC was NOT soft on crime without actually upsetting one of their major constituencies-blacks who saw any call for crime crackdowns as racist. There is no doubt whatsoever that gun control was a pretense of crime control designed to placate the slow witted masses screaming for something to BE DONE while not running the risk of alienating blacks and their advocates

I am all for facial branding of repeat violent felons, making it easy to identify them by anyone, but I would guarantee that would be opposed by liberals.
