It's not just important, it's almost like one of the pillars on which a functioning democracy stands. Yet in recent times there has been a trend of government passing law, a reinterpreting old laws, to make it illegal for private journalists to use certain tactics to carry out investigations. Things like secret recordings and sting operations. If it becomes illegal to employ these tactics to investigate stories, how are news organizations going to be gather evidence of things for the public that they suspect may be going on?
