I'm amazed there's not one thread on the Tillerson-Putin-Lavrov talks yesterday.

The thing that struck me was Tillerson's circumspection about the 'chemical attack', and his assertion - after all the blame for it having been put on Assad - that there's no proof of the regimes involvement, only 'information' (and we all know how gullible the US is when it comes to analysing information? If anyone doesn't, ask any passing Afghani!). WTF?? What with that bizarre admission, and now Trump's imminent self-destruction, I'm beginning to think I'm in some kind of surreal bubble of discombobulation.

Still nothing? This is seriously weird; I'd have thought the board would be a-buzz with it.

From the news reports it appears the there was no common ground between Tillerson and Putin.

When people talk about Afghanistan I wonder if they are aware of the history of Afghanistan since the early 1970s.

Do you suppose they know that kite flying is a national pastime or that it was banned by the Taliban?

Based on the current rantings and inflamatory rhetoric being hurled around at the moment I would be astounded if anything of substance actually occurred all seems like a waste of Avgas flying there.
I think that is reflected in the article in very little to report other than background?

Just type "muslim" or "islam" somewhere then it'll get noticed..

Yeah weird huh?.....before Trump entered the Whitehouse it seemed that just about every member of his team was meeting, tweeting and telephoning everyone from the Russian ambassador, bankers right down to the Kremlin housekeepers which the Trump team took great pains to point out was the normal "getting to know you" process - part of the transfer of power from one administration to another. So following all this dialogue they now seem to have so little knowledge of the realpolitik and so little understanding of their opposite numbers....

    I noticed that too.

I just can't understand why Russia isn't as concerned about Syria as we are. Have they taken in any Syrian refugees?

They want airbases and naval bases in the Med! Its about influence and projecting power and I doubt they give a stuff about WMD, dead kids or cruise missile attacks - they play the long game and have always needed to have a pitch in the mid-East. The flip-flopping of the US/Europe over what to do about Assad has handed them their goal on a silver platter.

The Russians have had a tiny, 4 berth naval base at Tartus on the Syrian coast since 1971.. and I think that since 2009 they have dredged and expanded that base.

...and now they have the guy that they rent it from in their back pocket. US/Europe have tried to get them kicked out as well as trying to get rid of Assad so that the Qataris etal could run their gas pipeline through Syria under a "safe" regime. By maintaining their bases there for example they also threaten the dams in Turkey which control the water supply to Syria and Iraq.
