Really I'm just stocking up for winter but it is a good feeling to have all our food in for the next few months. Freezer is full and I have the propane here to run it, gas cans are full for the generator and the pantry is brimming with my wife's canned goods. Let Ebola break out or race riots or whatever, I will sit here and relax with a Scotch. Have a winters supply of that too.

if said riots do break out, where do you think that those fleeing the cities will go, hmm? to the rural areas, forced to take your stuff from you, that's where. i do'nt want my stuff in my house, or at least, not much of it. I want it cached, where only I am going to find it. Just ask the Branch Davidians or Randy Weaver whether or not govt can instigate lethal problems for you, over nothing, and destroy your home, etc. all you do by stocking up in your home is make yourself a fat, easy target.

If something terrible ever did actually happen, it would probably be a good idea to make things look as inconspicuous as possible. And by that I mean even if someone broke into your house, they wouldn't find a stockpile of food. If there was an emergency and people began starving, I wouldn't even be all that surprised if law enforcement started raiding people's homes, looking for illegal stores of food to "redistribute". I know that may seem unimaginable, but extreme things can and historically have happened in times of widespread natural disaster or conflict. You don't think they would use emergency measures for the "public good"? If you really want to be prepared for anything that could happen... otherwise what's really the point of having all that food?

Also, refrigeration is probably not really a long term storage solution. In old times, they used smoked and dried meat. There is also canning, or plastic sealed food packets that have been irradiated.
Ever had salmon jerky? Homemade and using real fresh caught fish, it can be really good.

Ah yes, every conservative's wet dream. To die on a pile of "thugs" manning a homebuilt Ma Deuce. Why does everyone think the population will flee the cities anyway? That's where the food is. People might flee at first but I think they will be right back once they find out that animals are actually elusive to hunt

Because history shows that the cities are the worsed place to be if a totalitarian system is in place (and a new hierarchy is building up every day, because people can't see that it's their own communication that is bringing them down, politics is causing extra communciation in a society, you can only stop to communicate over the news and politics)

Having seeds for years, water purification systeem and back up tablets, and a small garden and greenhouse, a light weight solar panel and energy storage (supercap bank, or very good batteries and charger, or a water reservoir energy buffer system under your house) a backup shelter, are much more reliable ways to survive a dark period in history.
Animals and snakes will be gone very soon if a few tens of million people start to hunt.

the food is on the farms, in grain bins and herds of livestock, dude. the cities have a 3 day supply of food, and that's IT. when the lights go out, the water stops running, sewers back up, etc. The cities will BURN, due to lack ofa fire department, lack of water.
