At least 9 Canadian churches set ablaze amid indigenous anger over residential schools (msn.com)

At least nine Catholic and Anglican churches across Canada have gone up in flames amid a backlash over the country's use of church-run residential schools to forcibly assimilate indigenous children from the late 19th century until the 1970s.

The Canadian media is just trying to fan the flames, churn up old history, and foment the natives against Christians - who tend to be a more conservative group within Canadian politics. Meanwhile just helping to create a more negative public perception of Christians and Canadian founding history (i.e. the message that nation was founded on racism and evil and the entire society needs to be completely reworked and changed, that there is nothing conservative worthwhile to try to preserve).

A lot of analogies here to the BLM movement in the United States.

The media seems to be dishonestly implying that the mass graves - several which have recently been unearthed amid new interest in this - are evidence of these Canadian schools killing native children.

Far more likely the children died from a cholera or smallpox epidemic.
Lots of people were dying from that at that time and native people were especially vulnerable because they did not have immune system resistance to those diseases.

Indigenous would like a meeting with the Pope on this....if no meeting ....more churches will get burned...until they do.

If that was the case, why didn't the churches inform the families of these dead children that they'd passed from disease. Instead, they were secretly buried. Many church leaders in Canada have come clean and accepted responsibility for the horrors that occurred with the residential schools, so whitewashing it with 'maybes' isn't going to fly.

If these "horrors" your refer to include mass deaths, then these "church leaders" are real pushovers and gullible.

Why don't you consider the times in those days, and the situation.

First of all, communication wouldn't have been easy.

And how do you know the parents were not informed of deaths? Did the parents make any attempt to contact those schools?

Not a case of gullible pushover....they were aware....just turned a blind eye.

I have land interests in SASK Canada....theres a small town almost an hour from my properties....former rez school torn down in 1970s.....theres a crew with ground radar searching.....I won't be surprised if bodies are found.

There was cases of sicknesses....but also lots abuse....im sure the CC was aware as well as the Vatican.....if any records were kept that is.

Respectfully, I suggest you do some indepth reading on this subject. Parents were not allowed to come in any contact with the schools - if they arrived, they were taken away by the Mounties. As for the knowing whether or not parents were informed - they were not. Children were just 'gone' and never seen again. That's part of the horror.

Seeing as how Canadians destroyed a lobster business, me thinks this is actually a serious issue and not a simple case of the “media is fanning the flames”.

Okay, but you don't seriously believe these schools killed children on purpose, do you?

And blaming Christians churches is just ridiculous. It's very much against their religion to commit outright murder.

It wasn't uncommon to bury bodies on-site.

Children had high mortality rates in those days, especially poorer areas. Disease commonly claimed many lives. Children had weaker immune systems to many diseases, and that would have been especially all the more the case with indigenous children.

Some ignorant people will ask why they didn't get medical treatment, but in those days with most of these diseases there was very little a doctor could do, other than let the disease take its course and hope the child recovered.

Depends how you define on purpose. I doubt they were branded witches and burned at the stake. I would not be at all surprised if they were considered less important than church doctrine, church reputation, or white settlers' children and neglected to the point of death.

With many exceptions. But again, this is more likely a case of neglect.

White settlers didn't have their children forcibly taken from them, and white settlers were allowed to know when their children died. I don't agree with the destruction of property, especially after so many years, but there is plenty wrong done here by the churches, and I am not particularly sad to see them go.

So what would have happened if the churches had not taken in the children?
You do realize the churches were not actually the ones who took the children from their parents.

I watch USA news so much more than our own Canadian news that I am not entirely certain which event you are referring to? Could you give me a hint so that I could do a search for the specific destruction of the lobster business that you mean?

Is this article on target at all with what you mean?
