    I thought it was fairly common knowledge that the celebration of Christ's birth was moved to near the winter solstace by the Roman Empire as a means to make conversion to Christianity more palatable for conquered/annexed peoples.

    Not that it really matters. The point is to gather with family and celebrate Christ's legacy. Its doesnt really matter when.

    I agree, it doesnt really matter.
    I think there is a school of thought that the romans gave the date 25/12 to appease the christians, so as they could worship on the same day that the sun god was born..therefore quite paganistic really...
    Be that as it is, I doubt if more than 1 person in 10 celebrates Xmas for the appropriate reasons
    due to the commercialization we see around us.

    Absolutely. Iirc, it was a minor holiday in the US prior to our becoming a consumer driven economy.
