We've tried being nice to criminals, they're literally running riot, time to build more prisons, lock more people up even for minor offences and throw away the key.

Who pays the bill? Why not put a tenth of that incarceration price towards prevention?

    What do you mean reintroduce?

How many inmates in this nation do you think are in state prisons alone?

And then if you add federal inmates and people incarcerated in county jails were probably about the highest in the world

We certainly should double the sentences for anyone who commits crimes of violence while brandishing or using a firearm. No parole, no time off for 'good behavior'... just full-term prison sentences, served in horrible places that are not run like 'community recreation centers'.

If that wouldn't cut way back on violent crime in America, then nothing could!

Oh my God, I could do a thread on this, but I’d be ripped to pieces, if not water boarded for my efforts. Best to stay quiet. :) The way to look at it is why is there so much crime in society and especially violent crime. Once that’s figured out the rest falls into place.

Most violent crimes are crimes of passion, or are committed by psychopaths - people in that frame of mind really don't stop and say
to themselves, "Oh, I better not do this, cause I might go to jail ...".

Now I do agree that white collar crime - especially hacking and identity theft, needs to have 20 year minimum sentences - or death.

Which white collar crimes result in a death sentence? Or 20 years minimums for that matter?

How would you suggest "preventing" crimes?

Absolutely. Ignoring crime, letting offenders off easy, letting them go free with no bond are all encouraging crime.
I say we start enforcing laws with stiff penalties. Death sentences for those who qualify. One year after being found guilty it’s ‘ol sparky for you!!! No 10 years of repealing. Have PBS run special on the crooks life with emphasis on the harm caused to victims and televise the execution. Hold a lottery where you pay money to be the person who throws the switch. Give money to the victims and families.

Life in prison, in solitary confinement (allowed by the U.S. courts by the way) would be a much better way to go. I even have some designs worked up for cells to economically confine people that way.

I say we massively increase the penalties for financial and other non-violent crimes. Violent crimes are bad, no question, but the non-violent crimes can have just as much detrimental effect on people.

You gotta catch them first. The biggest disincentive to crime is getting caught.

I have designs worked up for criminals to be hung or sparked up one year after conviction. Televised. No life in prison. And longer sentences for violent crimes and repeat offenders. Would like to see many of the perks taken away. No TVs, yard time. Add hard labor and add more schooling/training.

No thx. I dont want to pay for their care. They're really only a problem in certain areas that won't allow property owners to engage in reasonable enforcement of their own rules on their own property. If someone tries to camp in my front yard without my permission, I can take the garden hose to them and no one will stop me. If the trespassers try to use force against me, no one where I live will try to prosecute me for defending myself and my property. Thats why we dont have these people doing these things where I live. Other places could follow suit, no extra jails required. But they choose to do otherwise. Thats on them.

I can mostly agree, Daniel. Crime of ALL kinds, whether for 'passion' or for 'profit' are swamping this country. We need to stick those convicted of breaking the law into prisons and keep them there much, much longer than we do now. Capital punishment, as you suggest, is also an excellent remedy for crime, but libs would howl and scream if you tried to reinstate it.

We could learn a lot about "Crime and Punishment" from Vlad the Impaler!

    Yep.

For all the criticism of Biden's crime bill from the 90's; it worked. Locking up criminals keeps them off the streets and away from families. Bring back three strikes.

Well I guess I should clarify, since three strikes differed from State to State, but I mean three violent felonies.

I dunno who is spending even one night in jail for pot. Did you time travel from the past?

We can start with the insurrectionists on 1/6. They had no business breaking into the Capitol building. To make room for them in prison, let the pot smokers out of prison.

    For-profit businesses require repeat customers.

That's why every medication has a million side effects. Add on more pills to treat those side effects and keep the gravy train going.

You need an example of "three violent felonies?"

I'm not sure what you are confused about.
