You're saying that someone could buy a warship with fully operational cannons?

In the 1700’s and 1800’s, yes. And then, what’s more they could apply, and be licensed/commissioned as a privateer.
Could you do the same with a modern warship, a good question. I know of no law prohibiting it, but beyond the astronomic cost of building one, the additional cost of registering every individual explosive device (every one) who could pay for it?
Many people forget, you can privately own heavy machine guns, grenades, and even rocket launchers, but for each and every ‘destructive device, you must register it and pay your fees to the ATF. Then beyond that, you can privately cannon and tanks subject to local zoning ordinances, but for each explosive shell (destructive) device, you must register it and pay the fees to ATF.
So could you acquire/build a ship and then arm it, I suspect it possible.

    Machine guns - yes
Live grenades - According to the reading I did, no.
Rocket launcher - Yes, but a rocket launcher is basically just a tube. It's the rocket that is the issue, not the tube. Legally obtaining a rocket would be difficult or impossible. Looking around on the internet, I see blogs and opinions, but nothing from a reliable source.

Maybe someone else can point to something reliable and authoritative.

Search for this address in Google maps, turn on the satellite layer, zoom in ... all privately owned, I used to know the owner when I lived up that way years ago. Much of his collection can be seen from I94. Some not battle worthy, but some are.

    But wait, wanna play?
Shoot the cannon of a battle tank? A 105 Howitzer? Mortars?

The price for every round fired covers the ATF DD Registration fees.

    This isn’t the only place.

You can also go to atf.gov and check for the regs yourself along with the forms.

Then for sH*ts & giigles, if you have money enough for a small army...

So, legal, if properly registered? You tell me.

Like full autos, including mini guns, M2s, if you can aford them and pay to feed them, jump through ATF hoops and fees and...

Sorry, ADAD likely kicked in with a ‘Look Squirrel!’. I do tend to chase them...

    Pop this into Google maps
42.492247, -87.950443, turn on satellite and zoom to max

While the Constitution doesn't specifically address tanks, a reasonable interpretation of the 2A would be that it was talking about small arms - rifles and handguns. The other thing is that a modern tank costs about $8.5 million, and I doubt that General Dynamics would sell one to private person anyway.

But I would assume that they needed to have the absolute PERFECT setting for this and that it wouldn't be allowed for someone in their backyard in the middle of a city.

Makes sense to me! Different states have different laws. Apparently, some states will allow this, others don't.

That is true as I understand it. There similar such places, if I recall, correctly, in Nevada and Alabama.
OAs for acquiring a tank, a cannon, or even a retired military jet, there are online providers for those to be found with little search.
I do not know the specific permission required and suspect different laws apply at all three levels of government. I briefly tried to research it, but go nothing from the org Icited, more a couple others I encountered, except I did find detailed specific on how explosive ordinance (destructive) devices must be store, secured, and the account ability requirements.
