It may well be that our earth is something like an electron that orbits an atomic nucleus, which in turn is located in an object of a larger universe.

Once a concept has proven successful, why shouldn't nature reuse it? :)

Exactly how does a writer of fantasy books with an undergrad BA degree propose anything about astrophysics?

My thoughts -- a lot of BS claims are preceded or followed by the words "quantum mechanics." Panpsychism sounds like a religious or supernatural claim. Although the theory is advanced by someone with valid scientific credentials (Mattloff) I have to ask, has this theory been published in any peer reviewed scientific journals? Is there a single experiment that can be repeated by multiple individuals with repeatable results that in any way supports Panpsychism?

This [Panpsychism] is not a theory in science. It doesn't make any predictions that can tested. At the moment it is a philosophical school of thought and has been since the ancient Greeks
    https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/panpsychism/

This sort of speculation is what scholars once debated or explored in private while having brandy by the fire on a Saturday night. The new mode of speculation is to write books that are sold as pop science.

Pullman is writing a story. It's actually a rehashing of "Pilgrim's Progress" which is a thoroughly religious work. He's using Panpsychism as an interesting story device, like Warp Drive.

Humans have such a complex psychology that they cannot usually see through it. I say "usually" because there are some indications of 'enlightened' individuals (Buddha?) who have realized the limitations of intellectual activity. It may, therefore, be constructive to accept, at least as metaphor, that "consciousness" exists of itself somehow and that the 'mind' participates in it. That way we can conceive of this "consciousness" being present everywhere while being contained nowhere, perhaps not even within the 'universe'.

I think it is called 'pantheism', ie., the entire universe IS god.

I don't know if it is conscious, but I do believe there is a spiritual basis to life.

    I'm okay with pantheism.

On another thread, I was making the same argument If nature allows something to exist ( like the soul ) then it is natural, which is to say, there is no such thing as supernatural, unless you are referring to myths and legends and fiction.

Of course it is conscious. Just recently it told me it was planning to go to war with a nearby universe in 150 billion years. ;)

    I do believe so.....
Theoretical Physicists are coming with some really neat ideas related to consciousness.

The idea of some sort of "global consciousness" seems to fit with this possibility.

I absolutely believe all of creation is conscious of itself. “Intelligent infinity”.

Being a soul is completely separate from intelligence, or self awareness, or whatever you want to call it that neurological wiring supports. All came from the one creator, all part of intelligent infinity. A soul first spends millions-billions of years as a rock, simply learning the lesson of being, before then moving to the next density, that of plants and animals, and learning over many many lifetimes the lessons of meeting biological needs without the ability to have abstract thought. Near the higher end of that density or frequency, are pets. The love that people show their pets is the soul’s introduction to the concept of the identity, of self awareness, and is the bridge to the next density, which is being human.

The level of intelligence of the body is completely irrelevant. The soul has lessons to learn from both the body of a special needs kid who can barely form words, or the rocket scientist. The soul in both are equally great. A more advanced soul could reincarnate into the body of the mentally handicapped person to learn certain lessons when in the previous life it was in the body of say, a world leader.

Then there are densities beyond the ones that humans inhabit. But I won’t get into those right now, or about why in the third density we have no memory of previous incarnations. The point of it all is everything of creation is just a little part of the one creation, all part of the whole. Anyways, these are my beliefs. You can of course take them with a grain of a salt, lol.

Salt taken. There is no evidence of souls. Souls are a religious invention created by people who didn't want death to be the end of life. But if you like the concept you are free to believe it.

Why wouldn't I? Seems perfectly relevant. The topic was "Is the universe conscious". I stated that yes, I believe it was. Another poster asked me about my beliefs, so I expanded on it. Did my answer offend you in some way? I'll admit it has spiritual leanings, but I'm of the opinion that spirituality is just science that science is not advanced enough to explain yet. If my views upset you, I apologize I guess, but it all seemed perfectly relevant to me.

The half-smart rock suggestion is not easy to sell. Have you encountered any particular source of information or pertinent pattern that seems to support this notion?
Above and beyond the human state there are supposedly many levels up to a point where there is no information about the next destiny, or do you have more specific information about such levels and beyond?

Look up "The Law of One". It is a terrific channeled work. It covers the 7 densities before we return to the creator on the 8th and a new universe is born, described as an octave. Jesus is described as a 4th density being at the time of his incarnation, and is now working towards 5th density. "Yaweh", of the old testament I believe was described as a 6th density being? I may be wrong about that. I'd have to look it up. It goes into very great detail and uses very precise language to describe everything. I highly recommend checking it out. It's a great read covering pretty much everything from the history of the universe, evolution, the purpose of existence, etc, etc etc.
