I like the language 'lose to much altitude when making turns'.... LOL, what? If you want to do an armchair analysis of turn performance: work out the main wing surface area then divide it by the horizontal stabilizer surface area.... and the lower the resultant figure means a better turn performance. The issue of 'stubby & chubby' reflects on acceleration and top speed more then anything, and that is determined by available thrust.

    f16-f35-f22.jpg

Make your own determination from that pic looking at the differences... the F35 looks like it will do quite well.

I'm not sure why your comparing it to an F22 though... they are different types of aircraft meant to do different things in different ways. Put anything up against an F22 and it will win....

....but the dry thrust of the F22 is 56k pounds thrust at 43k pounds empty weight,
and the F35 is 25k pounds thrust at 29k pounds empty weight.
Versus the F16 which is 17k pounds thrust at 19k pounds empty.

So ignoring the F22 because its irrelevant to compare designs across different classes of design, you can see the multiroles are matched engine to weight ratio's pretty close, but the F35 is heavier because it's carrying so much more tech, like sensors and capacity to carry weapons internally etc. The F35 can carry a huge fuel load internally compared to the F16 which means the F35 can do a lot more, a lot more effectively.

The F35 is a safe aircraft so long as nobody takes one off the ground. Survivability in the air is roughly 30 seconds!

So what do you think of the idea of asking the Israelis to debug them?

    IAF engineers are highly motivated!

OK..... I have a method in mind to purchase F-35's for Canada, Australia, Israel and Britain.........… and the whole thing is financed by an increase in volunteerism..... in its many forms... that is organized through a massive database.........…

Please google the name Sigmund Ivarsson on this forum..........

I personally trust the comments by AboveAlpha and Axialturban on the F-35 over your obviously biased ideas on it! (But I do appreciate your sarcastic comment......LOL!)

I appreciate this thread having lost contact with the a/c discussed since leaving the aerospace industry following the post-cold war layoffs.

I did some work on adapting existing systems for both the F-35 concept and the YF-22 used in the fly off with the YF-23. The system used for the YF-22 was a mod of a system used in the B-2---remember the YF-22 being a 'black' program but not the F-35. My work on them was in the early 90's so I'm talking 'ancient history' with respect to their final designs.

The resultant F-22 was actually the 2nd design of a US Stealth fighter, with the predecessor being the Navy A-12 Avenger, a delta-wing carrier launched a/c. It was cancelled under Cheney when he was SOD but some of the designs wre carried forward to the F-22 (my work was on the concealed weapons bay).

The F-35 was supposed to be a lower-cost version of the F-22 but a do-all or having variations to satisfy not only NATO but the other US services. But as with the past, no single a/c is satisfactory to both USAF/Navy(Marine) services---the F-14 & F-15 are the closest, with swept wings reqd by the Navy for carrier takeoff.

The F-22 was always over cost and over budget and too expensive to build up a large fleet of. The F-35 was suppose to take care of that limitation.

Will keep up with this thread as have been out-of-the-loop for many years...

Whudda mean. Its already rolled out and operational in heaps of squadrons in the USA. It's the most capable jet at its job, and Trudeau was just being stupid in appealing to the left by exiting their participation from the program - unless he doesn't want a modern air combat capability that integrates well with its allies. But Canada doesn't even need an Air Force if it becomes another State of the USA :salute:
Or perhaps given its location just invest in suborbital long range hypersonic surface to air missiles with a highly adaptive, densely located surveillance and targetting system so that it can defend the motherland and not bother with international deployments.

    Interesting possibilities indeed!

Another option would be for President Obama to begin discussing a peace treaty with a little Canadian
micro-nation that technically doesn't exist just yet but........

G-d willing.... we will bee on the map shortly.....

The F-35 cops a bagging but then again what part of the possible propaganda have Boeing played in all this. They were absolutely filthy they didn't win contract. Many talk about the f-35 being cumbersome in air to air combat but apparently it's designed to take you out before you see it coming. If this is the case it's multi role capability was well worth the design effort. Technologically much more advanced in cockpit then other fighters. What would I know, I'm just your regular contrarian!

I am seriously impressed with your analysis......
and I sure hope that you won't mind if I copy and paste
what you just wrote in full into some other discussions that I
    have going on this.

Here is an example of one of the discussions that I want to
copy and paste your comment into:

Could P. M. Stephen Harper be correct abt the F-35 being the best for our air force?

    .....
p.s., I'm Canadian and I am kind of wondering what the phrase "cops a bagging" means?

Bagging or bagging something out is basically criticising. It must be Aussie slang.

    All good regarding copy.

It's generally reported to be better in all relative metrics. The fact a clean F16 can out accelerate and out instant G is sort of like saying how a Tesla can out accelerate a Porsche GT4 - true, but only just, but more importantly once on the racetrack its wholly irrelevant. Considering the reasons for those differences are relevant improvements in air warfare (larger internal fuel capacity and stealth shape) the argument against the F35 these days has dwindled to those who fought against it so hard they cannot swallow their own pride and admit they were wrong. Sure the F35 also brings with it so much more advantage over and above legacy systems, but in real terms I've not seen anyone point out any operational deficiency short of wanting more jets and teething problems common across all new mil av system development and fielding.

My understanding is that the F-35 blitzed the most recent Red Flag exercises. There are still some issues, especially with the carrier based models, but the aircraft is finally starting to do what was promised. I was a serious skeptic until relatively recently, but some informed folk have turned me around on the issue. This will be a very good aircraft when it ends up in combat.

Yep, the negativity is slowly but surely subsiding. I think every man and his dog were worried about this project and firmly believed the world was witnessing the most expensive lemon ever built!

I just received a post on the topic of the F-35 over in the
Canadian forum that I want to pass on to you because I know
that you could probably reply to this at a level at least somewhat
comparable to what AboveAlpha could do if he was still here:

I truly thank you for this well informed reply.

It is nice to run into somebody else also willing to admit it when
our opinion shifts on a particular topic.

Can the F-35 play a role in world peace?
