Steamboat Geyser in Yellowstone, the world's biggest active geyser, has entered an active phase after a long quiet phase. Doesn't really mean anything, but it's kind of cool.

Not that many will die from the initial blast honestly, its not as big as most people will think it will be.

The only real problem is covering about half the US in ash. Its certainly going to mess with the climate some and cause massive problems but its hardly a planet killer.

It all depends on how quickly we can get back to functional after the ash stops falling. The East Coast will remain relatively untouched, they just have to deal with the rest of the nation shutting down for a time. Other then some dust the rest of the world probably won't notice any effects directly other then maybe a temperature drop for a time or poor growth from crops.

And don't forget that we have another caldera in Long Valley, Ca that's also overdue to blow.

Oh it will definitely wreak havoc around the world and will probably indirectly cause many deaths.

My only point was that its not an extinction level event.
