Um, Jewish courts are presided over by men only, too. So are the Catholic courts and the Pentecostal courts. I'm not sure about the Hindu courts.

We have all the above religious courts in Australia and there's probably others I don't know about. Being an atheist I don't take much notice of them.

I have picked up that most posters on this thread seem to think the only religious court in Australia is sharia law. That's wrong, guys. We have all kinds of courts because we have all kinds of faiths.

The other thing I've picked up is most posters seem to think sharia law replaces Australian law somehow if you're Muslim. That's wrong too. Sharia law has no force and effect in Australia because it isn't a legally enacted body of law. It can't replace or override Australian law in any way.

This is true of all the different religious courts we have in Australia. None of them replace or override Australian law, all of them are subject to it.

That's why the old propaganda about sharia law meaning Australian women will be stoned to death for adultery, or that 12 year old Australian girls will be forced to marry a grown man, is so ridiculous. These things are illegal under Australian law.

Another way to look at it is to look at the question of divorce under Jewish law. In Israel, Jewish divorce is handled by the Jewish court only, not the civil court. Part of Jewish divorce law is that the husband must agree, in writing. A Jewish Israeli woman cannot obtain a divorce without her husband's consent. If he won't give it, she's stuck.

A Jewish Australian woman, on the other hand, can try the Jewish Court first and if her husband won't cooperate, she can go straight to the Australian Family Law Court, obtain her divorce that way and there's nothing her now ex-husband can do about it. Australian law trumps Jewish law, or any other religious law.

Problems can arise for citizens if religious law is rejected outright. There was case in Kansas, USA, were an Iranian born American citizen asked the Kansas divorce court to uphold the $667,000 divorce settlement she was entitled to under sharia law. Kansas doesn't recognise sharia law. It's one of the US states that bowed to the pressure of public opinion and banned sharia law outright. The woman walked away without her entitlement. Kansas let its citizen down, through what can only be described as appeasing bigotry and ignorance. The Kansas case was logged and reported by Amnesty International.

 

No, I dont for one minute think that sharia law will replace Australian law.

Honestly, from what I've read on this thread I think the fear and suspicion of Islam verges on hysteria. The fear of terrorism is hysteria. It would blow a risk assessor's mind.

I don’t condone violence, but disrupting a funeral service to preach Islamic supremacism is an insult of such epic proportions that I’m genuinely lost for words.

Embedded. A news item that got good coverage last night was about the CEO of Austraila Post. Ahmed Fahour. Interesting name, is he a Muslim, I do not know. The news story however was about his obscene salary, almost $6 million PA. Embedded, I am sure they do work in most government departments including defence.

A lot of Germans are very left-wing and feel it is the least they can do. I remember watching an interview where Germans were asked their opinions on the migrant influx. Two late middle aged German women. thought it was a good thing to help the ‘refugees’ and Frau Merkel had said Germany could afford it. I sometimes wonder what those women would say now. I was struck at the time by their naivety.
