I should think republicans ought to be wary of counting their chickens...

They really needed that boost considering the steaming pile of results they are producing. I agree. Government interference in ones right to bodily autonomy is unacceptable. Dems are still worse.

What does it say aboutbus as a people/society when wanting to let mothers indiscriminately up to the moment of birth kill their unborn babies is what is giving them a lift?

I'm not surprised. Not the smartest political move for the right! Then again, most of them aren't. This is what happens when a political party values lives more than votes. I've said it once and I'll say it again, the republicans need to also start PLAYING DIRTY and throw morals out the window for now...Adolf Biden's hate speech last night does a good job of cementing this fact

It means that there are quite a few folks who don't subscribe to that view of abortion and that legislating a woman's uterus doesn't sit well with them. Some of those folks also probably know that late-term abortions are rare and usually only done out of a medical necessity.

Need to start playing dirty? Playing dirty is the entire basis of Trump and the rise of MAGA.

Both parties have been playing dirty for quite some time. It's a stain on both of them.

Well, owing to your posting history, it's clear you do not grasp what 'results' means.

    https://chicago.suntimes.com/2022/8...anklin-roosevelt-lyndon-johnson-ronald-reagan

In the first 19 months of his presidency, President Joe Biden’s accomplishments echo themes and priorities from the major initiatives of Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Lyndon B. Johnson and Ronald Reagan.

Biden has governed from the center, remained sensitive to important issues affecting voters on the left and right and achieved a moderate level of congressional bipartisanship.

He has restored transparency and integrity to the White House and Department of Justice, while expanding diversity throughout the executive branch. He halted the federal death penalty and has appointed the most federal judges at this point in his tenure since Reagan.

He signed the Inflation Reduction Act, the American Rescue Plan, the infrastructure law, the gun law, the Chips law, the PACT burn pits act and the anti-Asian hate crimes law. He updated and reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act.

He has promoted worldwide democracy via military and humanitarian support for Ukraine, reinstated the U.S. as the democratic world leader and expanded and strengthened NATO. He completed a withdrawal of the U.S. military from Afghanistan and oversaw the killing of al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, who was Osama bin Laden’s right-hand man.

He addressed global warming, approved major offshore wind projects and provided drought and wildfire mitigation funds. He achieved historically low unemployment rates, created a record number of jobs, supported unions and provided higher pay for the working class. He significantly reduced the federal budget deficit, addressed gas price gouging, required publicly traded corporations to pay a modest 1% excise tax on stock buy-backs and assured corporations with over $1 billion in earnings will pay a minimum 15% income tax.

He provided effective COVID-19 pandemic management while making free vaccines and boosters widely available. He adopted and then extended healthcare.gov subsidies. He provided support for transgender troops, increased the size and number of Pell grants and enhanced funding for historically Black colleges and universities.

He provided expanded, refundable child tax credits for families with children ages 17 and under to the end of 2021. He significantly lowered child poverty levels. He provided Medicare recipients with free vaccines and a $35 monthly out-of-pocket cap on insulin starting 2023, capped out-of-pocket Medicare drug costs at $2,000 annually starting 2025 and allowed Medicare to begin negotiating drug pricing starting 2026.

He improved the federal student loan discharge process for permanently disabled persons, for defrauded students and students who now work in public service. Individuals earning up to $125,000 annually (and families earning up to $250,000 annually) are now eligible for up to $20,000 of student loan debt relief if Pell grants were used to help pay for college. Any student loan borrower who did not have access to Pell grants while in college will receive up to $10,000 in student loan debt relief if they satisfy the $125,000/$250,000 annual income limits. Borrowers with remaining undergraduate student loan debt after the $20,000 or $10,000 in loan forgiveness will be eligible for a new Income Based Repayment Plan, which caps the monthly payments at 5% of disposable income. After making 10 years of loan
payments, any remaining student loan balance will be discharged for these specific borrowers.

You'll need to substantiate claim like that from a credible source, and provide the full context.

If not, your comment is dismissed.

You are very kind to make my case for me. The total sum of these "accomplishments" is a lower quality of life for the poor and middle. (The people the left claims to care about)

Is it the abortion issue or is the Trump factor that has the trend heading the democrats way? On 25 June the Republicans had a 2.6-point lead in the generic congressional poll. That’s the day after the SCOTUS overturned Roe. A month later, 25 July the GOP had a 2.5-point lead. Which tends to indicate the overturning of Roe didn’t have any effect for at least a month. But on 25 August, the GOP lead had dropped to 0.2 points.

It seems to me if the abortion issue was the major player, we should have seen the shrinking begin immediately after the ruling. But through out July and August Trump was busy endorsing very poor-quality candidates, he was making big time news, not the good kind of news. Trump was busy assisting the Democrats in their attempt to retain congress via his actions and the pending investigations.

I don’t think abortion had a major effect. I think over the last 50 years those who were avid pro-life became Republicans and those avid pro-choice became Democrats. By avid, I mean those who would vote on the issue of abortion. That basically abortion was baked into the equation. I through my support to the Trump factor. Independents don’t like Trump much, they’re more apt to change who they plan on voting for the more Trumpian Trump gets. Most independents don’t give much thought to abortion. In fact, only 5% of independents rate abortion as an issue to decide their vote unlike Democrats. But Democrats are going to vote Democratic anyway.

We have no idea what's going to happen in November. But I was surprised by Sarah Palin, clear MAGA-extremist, losing her race in a deep-red state.

Yeah.. I tend to agree with this. Overturning Roe v Wade had a great effect in motivating Democrats. But turning away from the Trump-MAGA extremists was all thanks to the Trump-MAGA extremists that they are putting up as candidates.

One would think the combination of these two things might prove lethal for Republicans in November. But again: you never know what's going to happen. I make no predictions.

None of what you said made sense to me but I recall you usually are sensible so let me try to lay it out again.
Republicans wanted to save babies and risked votes in the process. (there are way more pro choice republicans out there than you think).
To me, thats an act of morality instead of selfishness, greed & power.

agree, over half of Republicans are pro-choice, the other half want the government choosing for other people, not themselves

And there it is go straight to rape...........do not pass go.......go directly to 1% of all abortions to avoid the issue. It does not require an abortion to prevent the mother from having their rapist baby.

    I asked first.

What does it say about us as a people/society when wanting to let mothers indiscriminately up to the moment of birth kill their unborn babies is what is giving them a lift?

Do you believe the moment before a baby who was the product of a rape is about to be born the mother should be able to decide to kill it instead? Do you put that human LIFE below your concerns for the mothers FEELINGS?

So they pretend abortion is something other than what it is? That is a logical way to arrive at their position on the matter? Abortion is abortion and late term abortions are done for the same reasons as early term.

Hardly. Biden's fight has hardly reversed the onslaught of the destructive neoliberalism entrenched in America mostly by the Right, which accelerated under Reagan. things have been going downhill ever since. But, your vision isn't penetrating enough to see it. You see only the surface. But, Biden's off to a good start, it will take a long time to reverse the damage done by neoliberal policies.

Wanting and what you actually do are to different things.

reversing roe won't stop abortion, but the death and injury rate amongs poor women rises.

That's why republicans are to be stopped, they lack wisdom and ability to govern.

If you hired a CEO for your company and that CEO hated your company, you think he'd do a good job. No, he'd destroy, either on purpose or through incompetence,

Republicans hate government, they don't believe in it at all, and that is why they can't govern. they are so lacking in wisdom to see that governemtn can be a force for good, and also be very necessary at the same time. But, tell that to a republican and he will think you oare talking about total government, communism. He can't see that there is centrist approach, that there is an equilibrium of the two polar forces between the private an the public.

It's all or nothing, black or white, red or blue, never purple. When it comes to purple they are color blind.

Anyone who doesn't understand that governments are necessary, and who hates government, that person cannot govern nor should that person have anything to do with governance. Go start a lemon aid stand or something, get a job in the private sector, but stay out of government.

    back up your claim.

a fetus is not a person. no one can say, for certain, when personhood begins, it can only be decided by decree.

But a zygote is not a person, a cell isn't a person. At some point, it's decided and in Roe, it was the third trimester. I'd compromise to keep the right happy at 18 weeks.

The right's claim ot this crap is religion, but there is nothing in the Bible that says a fetus is a person. Hell, the Bible treats the fetus like property.

My religion believes in reincarnation, and what abortion does is tell the soul that would have transferred to that fetus's body to find another womb.

It's not a sin, from my religious viewpoint, not at all. So, whose religion? We can't base it on religion, we can only decide it by judicial decree.

when a fetus is a person is a philosophical question that science cannot answer.

He called it like he saw it, that the MAGA movement is a destructive force.

It's okay to call a destructive force a destructive force, but those who are in it's numbers, aren't gonna like it and I don't give a damn, I've had enough of their destructiveness and evil, lies, utter lies, and more lies. They must be stopped by any legal and justifiable means, the are a threat to democracy, itself. 1/6 proved it. And now, Trump promises to pardon all the insurrectionists who were jailed.

Taht's the difference between Biden and Trump, biden is for democracy and the rule of law, Trump is for authoritarianism and the rule of Trump and he is a threat to democracy

The lines are clear, and the wise will choose democracy.

The fools will choose Trump, and make no mistake, that is a dying philosophy destined for the dustbin of history and that is precisely how the annals of history will record it.

I have no qualms about making predictions, but with the caveat that I’m using today’s numbers. Today’s numbers aren’t the same as they’ll be in November. But they’re the only numbers available today. The Democrats will gain 3-4 governorships, Massachusetts, Maryland, Arizona and have a shot at Georgia although R Kemp is in the lead. Which is okay since Kemp is on Trump’s enemy’s list.

In the senate, the Democrats will gain the seats in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and have a shot at North Carolina. A net gain of 2 or 3 seats while retaining Georgia, Arizona and Nevada. The three states rated as tossup’s by Cook, Rothenberg, Sabato and the rest of the professional prognosticators. The GOP will regain the house gaining 15-20 seats. But nothing close to a red wave election. I’m going district by district here, not by the generic congressional ballot. With a president whose overall job approval is around 40%, Biden is at 41% today, the historical average is 48.5 house seats lost, 6 senate seats lost with 4.25 governorships lost. Here is what the historical average is based on with a president whose approval is around 40%.

Biden 2022 41% ?????? projected loss of 15-20 house seats, gain of 2-3 senate seats, 3-4 governors as of 2 September

    Trump 2018 40% lost 44 house seats, 3 senate seats, 6 governors

    Obama 2010 42% lost 63 house seats, 6 senate seats, 4 governors

    G.W. Bush 2006 33% lost 33 house seats, 6 senate seats, 6 governors

Bill Clinton 1994 42% lost 54 house seats, 9 senate seats, 1 governor

All and all, if the above happens as I think will, I’d call that a great victory for the Democrats even with the loss of the house. Which isn’t written in stone yet with a bit over 2 months to go. All thanks to Trump, the best asset the Democrats have going for them.
