Not even our own intelligence agencies "affirmed and avowed" such thing.
"On this day in 1998, President Bill Clinton ordered airstrikes against Iraq after Saddam Hussein’s regime refused to cooperate with United Nations weapons inspectors. The four-day bombing campaign by the United States and Great Britain, code-named Operation Desert Fox struck military targets throughout the country.
Clinton administration officials said the aim of the mission was to “degrade” Iraq’s ability to manufacture and use weapons of mass destruction, not to eliminate it. "
Some Republican members of Congress accused Clinton of using the airstrikes to divert attention from ongoing impeachment proceedings that had been lodged against him. (The day before the strikes took place, the Republican-led House issued a report accusing Clinton of committing “high crimes and misdemeanors,”
1998???? We're talking about 2003!!
See why context is important?
It doesn't matter where the drone was. It was a sophisticated spy/survaillance craft and it was probing Iran's defenses. With all the US threats of obliteration and death and all the US military assets surrounding Iran they can only prepare for an imminant war and be on war footing.
Why would they allow their defences to be spyed upon from a country that is doing everything in it's power to start a war?
Peacekeeping or nation building has nothing to do with it. Regime change!
So you think we got smarter in five years about what happens in a closed society?
Not a single one was proven to be true much to Colin Powell and Larry Wilkerson's embarrassment.
But it wasn't the intelligence agencies so much as the administation cooking the evidence to justify war. Kind of like today.......
Likely with far more catastrophic results than Iraq which was weakened by earlier wars and had given up WMD's
Iran is going to be a whole other order of shtstm unless they somehow decide to capitulate to Bolton's threats and surrender unconditionally.
What are the odds?
Not impossible but I'm not holding my breath.
Fascinating watching you try to handle the spitting badger you have created.....terrifying for this poor old world but fascinating nonetheless.
we did have a deal and sadly Trump broke America's word on the deal
like I said, if he wanted a better deal, best to add to the current deal, now Trump is starting from scratch
the best deals Trump has come up with so far is deals to think about making deals and at this point, I think he will leave office with those being the only deals he makes
What the devil are you talking about?
This time I don't even have the slightest idea what you think the conversation was about. You made it clear you don't care about context, so I'll just keep that in mind from now on and not even try to guess.
Dang you really have a short memory.
What the hell?
In answer to your question: no: we did not get smarter in 5 years. We grew stupider between 1998 and 2003. In 1998 we had Bill Clinton, in 2003 we had Bush. Obviously we grew much more stupid. But don't even ask me to compare that to 2017
What that has to do with the discussion,... I have no idea.
The discussion drifted back to the Iraq war and what we knew about WMDs and when we knew it. It was not solely Bush's problem. Clinton also thought Iraq had WMDs. And by the way, the slate is not completely clean because we still can not rule out the possibility that they were working on them since they gassed the Kurds.
You rarely do.
Like I said, you just won't stop. Zero facts. It was a binding agreement entered into by seven nations. Obama secretly funneled nothing. That was money we sequestered from Iran as part of a previous punitive action. The nuclear agreement released those funds.
When Bush-Cheney made up their Iraq-WMD fantasy, the UK knew we were lying. As did Canada. As did any NATO nation that had any sort of intelligence agency of their own. But most of them stood behind us. They went to the U.N. with us. Ninety-something nations signed a war declaration against Saddam with us. Why? Because our alliances were clear.
I liked your post & agree. I think one of the greatest threats to our country now is the man occupying the White House.
What the hell? Clinton didn't invade Iraq! Clinton didn't lie to Americans and Congress and the UN about WMDs in Iraq. Bush did!
It's possible that Iraq had a WMD program in 1998. They did not have it in 2003!
What does that have to do with this thread??
It makes 0 sense to attack Iran. Iran is pretty decent on the scale of middle eastern countries.
Clinton believed they had WMDs. Clinton never said a word when Bush claimed they had WMDs. We don't know for sure what they had in 2003. There were all sorts of rumors about ships hauling stuff out of Iran plus they did gas the Kurds.
Yeah... and then you went on such a slippery slope I was about to head out and buy a sled.
Here is an interesting set of quotes right up to 2003.
Too many people don't understand that this is dangerous. Our national security depends on mutual credibility with our allies. And right now, we're lacking on both credibility and allies.
And it made no sense to pull out of the Iran deal. Which was working fine. Trump created a problem out of nothing.
Are you serious? How could Clinton have known one way or the other? He hadn't received a single security briefing since January 2001
We know for sure that Iraq did not have WMDs in 2003. And we know for sure that Bush lied us into a war.
That was in 1988!!!
My God! You have a mental confusion with the years, the likes of which are rarely seen.
Ok. This is not only off-topic, but completely ridiculous. You're on your own.
Just two years prior to 2003.
That you do not know for sure.
Why would they give their aggressor causus belli which they can use to invade while avoiding international interference?
And yet they themselves claimed credit for the downed drone. In international waters.
Separate names with a comma.
