Food, potable water, shelter and clothing?
Government is already a great benefit in all of these. They will even help you pay for an education at a community college. TANF is meant to retrain folks who have lost their job due to competition. Much of that competition is from other countries. I can't see anything you are offering that is different from what there is now?

How are you going to make folks treat their families better? We already have counseling centers, low cost or no cost health care facilities, and yet, folks still shoot each other. Take their firearms and they'll stab and beat each other to death. They will find an excuse. You can't legislate feelings in folks. You can only make it illegal to act anyway except naturally.

No, I don't think everything can be taken care of so that folks will treat each other better. Competition is natural... natural selection? Those animals and plants that do the best get rewarded. It's only humans who decide what is best. And, that changes from generation to generation, depending on what some deem important.

You know what motivates naturally competitive humans? Money and power. Take away things to work toward by giving folks what you think they need and they will get drunk and high, because they don't know why the hell they are living. They don't know what their purpose is.

 

It is true that we have governmental social programs to aid those in need. It is equally true that Republicans are constantly attacking and de-funding those programs at every opportunity, which limits their impact.

I agree with your statement that we can't make people treat each other or their families better, but if we help them to alleviate the stresses that cause those behaviors, that would probably help.

I would agree that many people are motivated by money & power. Our current President and most of his cohorts and political supporters would fall into that category. However, there's a substantial percentage of any population motivated by neither. For example: nurses, teachers, ministers, social workers, artists, etc. The exceptions to your statement may even out number the conformists. Conservative ideology doesn't make room for these exceptions--doesn't seem to even recognize them, as if everyone functioned exactly the same as they do themselves. Perhaps that's why conservatives like to pass laws that corral everyone into the same box, as if one size law fits all equally well--which is nonsense. So, I disagree with your summary that given the basics needed for survival, the financially challenged of society would lose all motivation for self-improvement. I suggest the opposite. I think they'd be excited to find themselves in the position of being able to pursue their own personal dreams, possibly for the first time in their lives, without fear of survival dominating their lives.

 

Nobody should give up, but they should be wise enough to learn from their mistakes.

Socialism is a middle ground between the two extremes of Communism & Capitalism, and like most good aspects of life, the middle ground is the most balanced and the most comfortable, and the best choice over all.
