John McCain revealed he has a 'very poor prognosis' — here's what we know about his aggressive form of brain cancer

Sen. John McCain of Arizona has glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

McCain, who is 81, had brain surgery in July to remove a blood clot above his left eye. His doctors determined the clot was connected to brain cancer. Shortly after, McCain returned to Washington to dramatically vote down the GOP's healthcare bill, before returning to Arizona for treatment.

McCain told CBS News' "60 Minutes" that doctors are treating the brain cancer with radiation and chemotherapy. While the prognosis is never good for glioblastoma, McCain's perspective is positive.

"They said that it's very serious. That the prognosis is very, very serious," McCain told 60 Minutes. "Some say three percent, some say 14 percent. You know, it's a very poor prognosis. So I just said, 'I understand. Now we're gonna do what we can, get the best doctors we can find and do the best we can.' And, at the same time, celebrate with gratitude a life well lived."

    An aggressive brain cancer
Glioblastoma is the most commonly diagnosed form of brain cancer, though it's still quite rare, with only three cases per 100,000 people.

The cancer tends to be treated with a combination of surgery to remove the tumor, radiation, and chemotherapy, according to the National Cancer Institute. McCain had surgery to remove the initial blood clot and is now being treated with radiation and chemotherapy while continuing to work.

With the combination of treatments, the median survival rate (a measure of how long patients on the treatment tend to survive) is 14.6 months, according to the American Brain Tumor Association. The ABTA noted that the five-year survival rate for glioblastoma, or the percentage of people alive five years after receiving the diagnosis, was just 10%. Children with glioblastoma tend to fare better than adults.

    Sad news about anyone.

In my view, this is reason to remove Senator McCain from key committee assignments, such as Chair of the Armed Services Committee of such extreme importance national security, nation defense, military actions, providing for veterans and all materials and equipment plus personnel costs decisions. This is not as punishment, but rather to the fact that this brain cancer will affect his judgment, memory, intellect and personality - and already sometimes when speaking in committee he rambles, forgets what he was saying, and mixes up countries and leaders. But if he will not retire, he should be removed by the Majority Leader of the Senate from committee assignments where he has vast decision powers and responsibilities for which lives and this future of this nation are at stake.

It is time for Senator McCain to retire. If he will not, remove him powerfully committee positions as a Senate in-house addressing of this matter, while still respecting that he is a Senator.

Although I have always thought John McCain should have been voted out of office after his first term I feel bad for him now. He has terminal cancer and he knows it. That has to be really tough on him and his family. It would be in his best interest to resign and try to enjoy life doing something else for the little time he has left.

After all these years thinking that you were a republican only to find out that you are really a democrat has to be even worse. Time for him to hang it up

What are the chances that gopers would be calling for McCain to resign if he were voting for their side? I would put my money on zero. These calls for senator McCain to resign over his health are nothing more than thinly-vieled attacks on his credibility to spite him for disagreeing with them.

Just to add, with his health going down hill this is his way of giving Trump the middle finger before departing. A true patriot!

It is all about the range of discussion. Essentially who controls the questioning? For decades liberals have hijacked the permissable content of our politics. Therefore, what we may see as "right" now is essentially centrist; unbeknownst to our citizens.

They're ***** footin' around. As politicians, no decision is better than any decision when it comes to the safety of their career, even if its at the expense of others.

His disease is sad, and the damage his inconsistency is doing to any legacy he might have enjoyed is sad. Sad all around. We all gotta go sometime, but I hope he outlives his prognosis.

I would tend to agree if it were not for an entity within the ranks of both parties now know as the "deep state." I'm not big on conspiracy theory. I have lived long enough to know that nothing that is presently happening in American politics is a first, far from it.

Do you see the irony in your statements- tax cuts and infrastructure spending. LOL How about cutting down spending since even if tax cuts do stimulate the economy that will take a whike to havecan effect. The tax cuts will need to be targeted for best results.

My heart goes out to Senator McCain and his family. He is terminal and he knows he's terminal. I hope whatever time he has left is comfortable and productive. John McCain is an American hero and icon. I met him a few times when I was working on his 2008 campaign, and I was impressed with his warmth and the way he put me at ease.

    Best wishes, Senator.

Senator McCain should step down! It is simply time. Thoughts and prayers to a man who has dedicated his life to service, whether we agree with him or not.

It is his call if the disease has not ravaged his brain to the point that he can no longer make the call! As I said, it is time now!
