    Sod off, John Oliver!

He understands nothing and just exposed his leftist state-wanking face.

It is highly important for UK to leave the EU so that all the others of us can follow.

Good luck with that. What will really happen if they vote leave is the break-up of the UK. Not the EU.
The UK already tried not being a member in the 60's when the common market consisted of a handful of members. They quickly learned that they could not stay out and spent a decade begging to join. Now that the EU has over 20 more members it is complete folly to think the UK will be able to stay out.

Yeah. If UK leaves Scotland will call for a new referrendum to vote for independence, which will probably result in a "yes" and then in Scotland joining EU because Scotland absolutely adores the benefits of other people's tax money. Thus the UK will no longer be, but who the heck cares?

EU is a supra-national sh-t institution that serves zero function for anyone but their leaders and MPs.

Haha... I will remember that next time I look at the station built with EU funds, the historic sites renewed with EU funds, the agriculture prices kept down by the EU.
Next time I speak Sicilian with my family I will remember who gave the funds for maintaining the language and so on.

But sure... The EU only exists for the leaders and MP's...

Because stations and historic sites did not exist before the EU. Besides who do you think is paying for this anyways?

Since when does protectionism keep prices down? Also, do you have any clue what the EU has done for agriculture and farmers in Sweden? The answer is; screw them in their arses.

    Minchia!

No, it exists for us all and that is exactly where the problem is. :D

The EU with its budget. They did exist before, but had you visited countries in the EU you would know what I am talking about. Whether in Portugal, Spain or Poland.

I am not particularly interested in Swedish agriculture and how they have adapted to the EU. If they lost out on the EU they would be the first though.
But yes... Part of the reason for CAP is to keep the price of food at low levels. Read more here:
    http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_MEMO-13-631_en.htm

Decide whether it exists for one or the other. 99.9% of the EU benefits us directly. Whether by allowing us to move anywhere, keeping roaming prices down or keeping our food at low price.

I don't even need to watch this. He will be staunchly pro-EU. I cannot watch it as I am in a remote area and cannot afford data charges.

Leave and negotiate bilaterally as a sovereign nation like us and everyone else. The EU has a massive incentive to negotiate for free trade with a Britain not strangled by their bureaucratic autocracy - free trade helps both parties. They would be shooting themselves in the foot by not doing so.

I can 100% guarantee remain will win, especially given the (highly regrettable, but irrelevant [and convenient for the elites]) sob story over Cox.

The UK leaving would be the beginning of the end of the EU and progressives. This will be a beautiful thing. Europe needs to find her soul again, and that isn't found in the collective; it's found in each of the individual nations and their amazing languages, cultures, and beliefs.

The immigrants who come to these nation must be made to assimilate or leave. There is no more reasoning with progressives as they are ignorant and bringing out their own country's demise with their political correct insanity. Long live Europe, long live the individual nations - long live the Patrirachy.

    This below is not Europe:

If Finland were to have their very own "Brexit" the name of the campaign would have the most kick-ass sound to it ever; "Fixit". :p

It wouldn't be 'EU funds', it would be an abatement of what we'd already handed over in the £350 million per week subscription payments. The reason it isn't deducted from those payments is to obscure what is essentially a form of Brussels-engineered money-laundering, viz. the more there is swilling around, and the more it can be disguised with a bit of jiggery-pokery here and there, then the more can 'disappear' and in so doing become unaccountable to the EU's accountancy wonks. Which is why the accounts haven't been written off for bloody donkey's years.

I saw Oliver's show on it, and I was fascinated by the fact that he didn't bother to make any economic or political argument for the UK staying in the EU. His argument boiled down to, UKIP supports leaving, they're racist, so do the opposite. Of course, it is a comedy show so it ended with a nice musical number.

Must be a case of ignoring what you don't want to hear. He made a political argument for staying by saying that the UK would need the common market anyway, that the regulations would still be applied, and that being out would mean following the EU without any influence. He debunked the economic claims by the Brexit side. Both their expense claims, their claims about what benefits they get and what it will do to migration.

Bigotry and racism is a huge part of the Brexit side as he also shows clearly. It is interesting though that the only thing you remember of a 15 minute piece where he talks about regulations, economic impact and migration is the racism part.

He does a recap at around 11 minutes.
    Here is what he says:

    1. Immigration policy may not change
    2. Hysteria over regulation is a red herring
    3. The costs of membership are reasonable (he did not even touch on the fact that the UK has been getting a rebate the last 40 years)
    4. The economic benefits of staying seem to outweigh the costs

Maybe you want to watch it again and pay attention?

Based on your summary, I don't need to watch it again, I got the gist. As your summarized points show, he can't point to anything concrete. Immigration may not change? Or it may? No one knows? Pay no attention to the EU regulation in the corner? The membership costs are not bad (nothing to do with whether the membership is worth it)? And basically stating, "the economic benefits of staying seem to outweigh the costs" as some sort of declarative end of the matter? That's all quite vague, but as I said earlier, it's a comedy show. Stay in the EU, or don't stay, but don't base your vote on John Oliver.

Well... It all depends on the negotiations between the UK (probably England as Scotland and Wales would break away to join the EU) and the EU.
It will be up to the EU to decide what the price will be for allowing them access to the single market. Allowing EU citizens to migrate to the UK would probably be one of the first things they would need to agree to.

Regulations will be enforced whether they are in or out. The regulations have made EU products the safest in the world and if you want access to the single market you will need to abide by EU regulations. This counts for Apple as it does for the UK.

You are expecting me to explain to you what he already did in the video. Watch it and and listen carefully to the arguments.

I think you read a whole lot in that show that wasn't there. So on the matter of Brexit, I'll put you down as a John Oliver fan.

It makes economic sense to stay in the near term. I would still vote to leave.

No... Please watch the video and try to take notes. I think you will be surprised to find that John Oliver more or less touches on everything I have written here.
Including the fact that much of this depends on how the negotiations go. How the EU responds. Whether they want to make it as tough as possible for the UK or not.

Oh I agree he touched on them, but as I said (and you demonstrated) his touches were pretty light and vague. He came armed to the teeth with innuendo.

I get it, you're a John Oliver fan so you parrot whatever he says. I know the type. I have an email corespondent who emails me every week with his latest outrage that just so happens to have been Oliver's topic that week. Plus some all caps variation of OLIVER DESTROYS TRUMP/RETHUGLICANS/RELIGIOUS....well fill in the blank. He clearly has done headline writing at Salon.

Whether I like him or not has no relevance to our exchange. You posted a comment that was clearly wrong. You either did not pay attention or you commented without watching.

Moving the goal posts is a sign of defeat. Furthermore I do not know what you expect from a comedians 15 minute segment. He touches on the relevant issues regarding the referendum, he debunks many of the claims and gives reasons for why staying is in the UK's best interest.

If you want a detailed in depth analysis you will need to go somewhere else. There is plenty of material out there though so it shouldn't be hard.
I can recommend this book if you want to know more about the EU, its history and how it functions:

    A. I did not move the goal posts

    B. The thread was specifically Oliver's take on Brexit, not an "in depth analysis."

    C. What I expected from a comedian's 15 minute segment is exactly what I got. Not what you are claiming it was.

Of course you did. You went from claiming this:

He made both political and economic arguments although you claimed he didn't.
After being shown so you moved the goal post to:

It would be an idea to pay attention next time before posting. Or you could just have admitted that you didn't pay attention and be done with it. But nope... Not on this forum. People make a mistake they will run it until hell freezes over instead of just admitting the mistake.

I have some experience with John Oliver fans, as I've mentioned before, so I get the fanatic dedication to pablum that he brings out. But let's review the serious issues that you say he brought to the fore:

    1. Immigration policy may not change

He literally interviewed a guy who said he didn't know how immigration would be effected

    2. Hysteria over regulation is a red herring

    That actually says nothing.

    3. The costs of membership are reasonable (he did not even touch on the fact that the UK has been getting a rebate the last 40 years)

It's reasonable if you are getting something out of it. Saying you get a rebate on your membership doesn't mean much if you are getting no or negative value for the membership. Issues not addressed.

    4. The economic benefits of staying seem to outweigh the costs

Huh? Just saying that doesn't address the issue.

That would be like me giving a reason for Brexit to simply say, "Economics." It's literally devoid of content.

Again, perfectly fine for a comedy show, but probably a serious person should check other sources besides Oliver before voting.
