Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the demure firebrand who in her 80s became a legal, cultural and feminist icon, died Friday. The Supreme Court announced her death, saying the cause was complications from metastatic cancer of the pancreas.

The court, in a statement, said Ginsburg died at her home in Washington surrounded by family.

"Our nation has lost a justice of historic stature," Chief Justice John Roberts said. "We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her, a tired and resolute champion of justice."

A lady and a hard working champion of human rights she was... RIP Ruth!

Will President Trump be able to nominate and push through another first term Conservative judge?

    RIP. She will be missed.

Thankfully McConnell has set the standard for SC justices dying in an election year, so this election just got a lot more important

Rest in Peace. I don't always agree with her rulings and positions, but there was absolutely no doubt that she was an Constitutional advocate and a great American.

Nah, they will seat a new justice. The dems got rid of the filibuster for judges so Turtleman (no relation) will get someone seated. RBG was a wonderful woman-an unbelievable devoted wife whose support of her cancer stricken husband at HLS is of legendary proportions, but she was an awful justice whose views of individual rights were unbelievably hypocritical

The Dems only changed judicial appointments to end a historic Rep blockade.

McConnell changed the SC rules and made it clear that the "American people deserve a voice in the choice of the next SC justices".

Or does that only matter when the Dems are in charge?

Are you really asking? Do you expect any sort of intellectual consistency from Trumpers?

I don't know this particular individual very well so I dunno where he stands on things but generally I ask to either hear the responses I will come to hear much of in the coming days

Or I might get a reasonable argument. I guess we shall see.

There is nothing to stop Rs from installing a replacement on the court other than their own ineptness, which unfortunately for Rs, is often quite spectacular.

They hold the Presidency and the Senate.

The Senate requires a two third vote for, ugh, what is left besides impeachment? Treaties?

    The 3/5s vote is dead.

Most all votes in the Senate are now simple majorities.

The great US Constitution, hmmm, didn't think to encode some stuff.....

There are 53 Rs in the Senate so it is theirs to lose.

I said many a time, MG should have been given a hearing, and then shredded on his hatred of the second amendment and voted down. But there is Bork, Keisler and Estrada. SO two more

For once you and I agree. I think that the replacement process should occur after Trump's re-election rather than before. There is no hurry. Trump isn't going anywhere and realistically the court has been getting along just fine without any meaningful input from Ginsberg for quite some time now. It would instead make an interesting start for Trump's second term.

Well... the drama is caused by the timing of her unfortunate departure, not by her herself.

She's Catholic and teaches at a Catholic school...we know their VP nominee hates Catholics....so, the DNC will likely go back to their old Klan handbook, when it comes to Catholics

Well, I disagree. This election is just as important as it ever was. But I believe it'll motivate Trump voters to go out and vote like nothing else.

And poor sleepy Joe... all of a sudden his only campaign issue is now being downplayed; I've scanned today's headlines and hardly anyone is talking about the Chinese virus.

To be fair to Sleepy Joe, he was also trying to blame Trump and Climate Change on radical leftists setting forest lands on fire.
