In response to liberals wanting to use the COVID-19 virus to violate the Second Amendment and shut down gun shops, the Governor of Kansas has issued a statewide order preventing local municipalities from shutting down gun and ammo shops.

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has issued a statewide “stay home” order aimed at reducing the spread of COVID-19 in the state. Part of this includes the closure of businesses that do not perform what the state considers to be “essential functions.” The order does include as essential businesses those that “manufacture or sell firearms, firearm accessories, or ammunition,” meaning that they may remain in operation.

The order also incorporates an explicit reference to all functions detailed in the Department of Homeland Security’s CISA guidance on essential workers which now includes “workers supporting the operation of firearm or ammunition product manufacturers, retailers, importers, distributors, and shooting ranges.” This critically important language was incorporated in the recently updated CISA guidance at the request of NSSF.

Members of the firearm and ammunition industries in Kansas should review the order and be sure to follow the social-distancing guidelines prescribed. NSSF® urges all members to closely follow CDC guidelines, practice social distancing and take precautions to protect the health and safety of their employees and customers.

Now that the matter has been federalized by Donald Trump, with the department of homeland security holding that federally licensed firearm dealers qualify as essential businesses that must remain open, what choice do state governors have but to comply?
