Paul Krugman Blasts Media Over Presidential Debate: Press Can't 'Handle Flat-Out Untruths'

By Paul Krugman | HuffPost | 10/07/2012 12:43 pm EDT
Excerpts:

“Paul Krugman hammered the media over its handling of the first presidential debate, specifically what he said was its failure to fact-check Mitt Romney.

President Obama's performance on Wednesday dominated the roundtable discussion on ABC News' "This Week" Sunday. Instead of piling criticism on Obama like other pundits, however, Krugman took aim at factual inaccuracies made by Romney during the debate.

"I don’t know whether to blame Lehrer or the president but it was kind of amazing cause Romney was not only saying things that are not true, he was saying things that his own campaign had previously said weren’t true," he said.

The Nobel Prize-winning economist alleged that Romney displayed "contempt" for the press and assumed that "the news media will not cover me on this. As long as I say it forcefully, they'll say I won."

"Oh, so you’re saying the press is against Obama now?” panelist Mary Matalin asked in disbelief.

“The press just doesn’t know how to handle flat-out untruths," he said.

Other members of the roundtable objected. James Carville said that Obama could have confronted Romney "on any number of issues" during the debate, while Peggy Noonan insisted that it was "the president's job" to correct Romney's inaccuracies. Jonathan Karl claimed that Obama was also "loose with the facts."

‘No, those were minor compared with Romney’s"Krugman said, when Karl gave specific examples.’“

......

It’s true that the media has been negligent in following each political camp with objectivity, and they let many lies go unheeded as they sit and wait for “the fight” between the two candidates.

It doesn’t matter to them that one is a corporate raiding, tax evading, moderator-bullying, outsourcing king, and chronic liar, while the other is a reserved fighter for the people of this country..who has kept our country from a deeper depression, who has kept America afloat since the departure of the Bush Regime with a country in full free-fall and a trillion dollar deficit from previous republican-inspired irresponsible actions.

All the media is interested in is reporting what moves without fact checking anything Romney says and calling him on it. That should have been done since the primaries with every nuance from both candidates reported objectively, but they appear so in awe of this sleazy, lying, draft dodger, tax dodger, multimillionaire who pays only 13.9% of his many millions of dollars in earnings in taxes.

Also he has refused to show any more than two years of doctored tax returns, and has never seen fit to join the service, qualifying for many deferments plus none of his five sons have entered our service which is very strange, but you never see the media questioning this either.

Krugman? Serious? Why not quote Axelrod, The Carny or Plouffe?

...

When you cannot justify the article, do you always have to demean the author?...or maybe the poster?....you are kidding no one as to your utter incapacity to actually debate an issue.

Just take a quick jab and run like a coward is your apparent mantra....

Noooo, Matlin asked: "Oh, so you’re saying the press is against Obama now?”
Krugman's answer: “The press just doesn’t know how to handle flat-out untruths,"

Congratulations on the funniest bit of unconscious satire I've ever read. You can't make stuff like this up...unless you are a fully lobotomized slave to president Sugar Daddy.

KRUGMAN: When you say my covers pre-existing conditions when it doesn't and when your own campaign has admitted in the past that it doesn't, what do you say? That's amazing.

MATALIN: You have Mitt characterized -- and you have lied about every position and every particular of the Ryan plan on Medicare from the efficiency of Medicare administration to calling it a voucher plan, so you're hardly...

KRUGMAN: It is a voucher plan.

MATALIN: You are hardly credible on calling somebody else a liar. Here's what else...

LOL, as they say. You act as if these things cannot be verified. Speaking of little bearded gnomes, are you a small painted cerramic figure that works in a garden somewhere, by any chance? Your claims are as absurd as your characterization of Obama as a
"reserved fighter" for the people of this country.

The Fed says we ( American households) lost ten year's worth of net wealth in a three year span ending in 2010. If Sugar Daddy "fought" any harder for us we'd all be living in caves and fighting over road kill (assuming people could afford to drive their cars anymore).

ANd yet, NONE OF THE BLOWHARDS could cite A SINGLE LIE,despite the "many issues" they claim Romney lied about.

They are so full of crap, they don't know when they are NOT LYING,or what the Truth is.

Justify the article??? Seriously?

PLEASE STOP POSTING ARTICLES FROM THE HUFFINGTON POST....IF YOU WANT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY.

The Open Society Institute is one of several foundations funding the Investigative News Network (INN), a collaboration of 32 non-profit news organizations producing what they claim is "non-partisan investigative news." The James L. Knight Foundation also backs the network and is possibly the most-well-known journalism foundation. Knight President and CEO Alberto Ibargüen is on the board of directors for ProPublica.

INN includes the Investigative Reporting Workshop at American University, the liberal web start-up MinnPost, National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting, National Public Radio, and the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism. The network had included the liberal Huffington Post investigative operation among its grants, but HuffPo investigations merged with the possibly even more left-wing Center for Public Integrity, on whose board Arianna Huffington sits.

Liberal academic programs, left-wing investigative journalism and even supposedly neutral news organizations paid for by a man who spends tens of millions of dollars openly attacking the right. George Soros is teaching journalists that their industry has a future as long as he opens his wallet.

AOL has agreed to purchase The Huffington Post for $315 million, the two entities announced in a joint news release Monday.

“As part of the transaction, Arianna Huffington, The Huffington Post’s co-founder and editor-in-chief, will be named president and editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post Media Group, which will include all Huffington Post and AOL content,” the statement said.

The new group will have a combined 117 million unique visitors a month in the United States and 270 million around the world, according to the release, which cited December 2010 data from the marketing research company comScore.

In 2009, the Huffington Post announced the creation of an “Investigative Fund” to do investigative journalism. The hilarity of the HuffPost doing real journalism is illustrated by the fact that almost six weeks later they haven’t produced anything [1] and by their Z-list celebrities who had previously used a related tag [2].

And, while the announcements [3][4] mentioned the name of the Fund, they didn’t mention the Soros connection: From American Spectator (link):

The program’s startup budget will be $1.75 million. The money will be provided by the Huffington Post and the Atlantic Philanthropies. The Bermuda-based Atlantic Philanthropies is headed by Gara LaMarche, who used to be a vice president of liberal uber-philanthropist George Soros‘s Open Society Institute. LaMarche is a member of Soros’s Democracy Alliance, a billionaires’ club that is organizing to impose socialism on America.

http://bunkerville.wordpress.com/20...n-post-does-george-soross-money-come-with-it/

“And now, here's what he's doing . . . ” Beck said. “He's buying up journalists. Soros' Open Society Institute just announced for you $1.8 million to add 100 journalists at NPR radio stations across the country. The only good thing here is at least George Soros is now just buying the reporters out in the open. So, that's great.

“So, the Huffington Post is going to be funded by George Soros and the Tides Foundation and their investigative arm. Yes. And then Soros Open Society Institute is helping fund NPR. That is great.”

Oh and for your reading pleasure, here's Krugman getting caught in a recent lie.

I'm sure you can dispute these claims, instead of attacking the articles....correct?

Paul Krugman looks like a possum eating crap out of a broken bottle every time he opens his mouth. That the usual liberal fools run to him every time they need a useful possum is no surprise.

He got buried today. Called a liar on national TV, and could not refute !

Except that Krugman did. Romney's lie about pre-existing conditions was a pretty big deal, IMHO. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/05/opinion/krugman-romneys-sick-joke.html

I also love how one of the most respectable economists of the 21st century is suddenly a completely unreliable source for any analysis, commentary, or data... Even within his own field, apparently.

I've found that interesting as well. He did win a Nobel Prize for his work in Trade, but ever since he became a NYT opinion writer, he writes opinion pieces with no more basis in fact than the average pajama clad blogger and his articles need constant fact checking. Just Google Krugman Truth Squad. He's kept plenty of writers busy.

And he's not afraid to deny he ever wrote something he previously wrote.

His work on Trade may in fact be brilliant, but his credibility has been shot by constantly printing inaccurate crap.

He was on ABC's This Week this morning and got fact checked by Mary Matlin. Sorry, but if you are a professor of Economics and a political consultant can bust you out, you have a severe credibility problem.

Ha, Krugman’s credentials on exist in the illusionary delusions of the same sycophants who gave Obama the Nobel peace prize.

This is ripe. The ONE time the clueless MSM has let Obama dangle in the wind you folks come unglued. Mathews goes over the edge, Krugman is fit to be tied and Obama himself is stunned. Not to worry Agent, the MSM narrative is set to support Obama, it just took a days for them to agree on what it was going be. See ya in NOV!

PLease QUOTE the "lie", not what the NY Slimes Op-ed piece and Krugman are pretending is a lie. Romney told the truth about "pre-existing conditions"; you ARE NOT EXCLUDED FROM COVERAGE BECAUSE OF THEM.

Read your own link...which also fails to make the case.

There was no Romney lie exposed either in your post or in your link. You need to do far better than that; this isn't your normal democratunderground.com vacuous slop crowd lapping up your bullsheyot.

Krugman shot his own credibility by being owned on his own blog and tearing the posts down, and by being caught in lie after lie.

He is one of the most vile pieces of sheyot in this country.

That’s funny, Republicans complaining about a media outlet being owned and sponsored by big private business! Will you surprise me even more and start demonstrating against Murdoch’s “fair and balanced” little media-empire next?

I’d be the first to agree that the fact that big business owns pretty much all the media – except for maybe some public broadcasting – makes it pretty much impossible to hope for a neutral press truly devoted to truth and nothing but the truth and thus endangers the very foundations of democracy.

But then again I’m not a stout believer in private enterprise and the miracles it can supposedly work if left unhindered. I’m just a leftninny, socialist European leftist tree-hugger who loves public broadcasting and looks at the American way of political campaigning with bewildered astonishment.

What, that Romney's plan supports health insurance for those with pre-existing conditions? It doesn't. He intends to repeal Obamacare, and has no replacement planned for it. In other words, it's back to the status quo - of people with pre-existing conditions not being able to buy health insurance.

Do you honestly believe that Romney is going to repeal ObamaCare? Really? Don't listen to their rhetoric. That is going to be the last thing on his mind IF he wins. Reminds me of Obama when he was against the Bush tax cuts, Gitmo, Patriot Act, etc.....it is all talk.

Romney is now saying that he's going to continue to pursue the repeal of ObamaCare upon becoming President, but he's going to protect people's pre-existing conditions. That's pretty much the very heart of ObamaCare right there. Yeah, keep that one in there, Mitt. Screw the rest of that bloated waste of taxpayer money.
