    True

And when you realise how few die per year........

We lose more women in childbirth than people from snakebite per year

Mind you the sharks make up for the snakes - but you can always stay out of the water - particularly if you are a prime minister ;)

Have they ever actually killed anyone?

Also, someone shouldve peed on her. Uric acid substantially reduces the toxin's effects.

    Yes there have been deaths

Irukanji syndrome is also associated with Out of control hypertension (high blood pressure) and pulmonary oedema (water on the lungs)

There have been two recorded deaths due cerebral haemorrhage

And unless your urine is VERY acidic it will do nothing for the sting

Does that actually work for other stings, in general terms, or is it an old wives tale? I mean once the toxin is in the system does peeing on the sting achieve results?

The jury is still out on urine, some experts say yes, others no. I would recommend anyone going to swim in the ocean or camping in the scrub, dropping into Coles and investing a dollar in a no-name 500ml bottle of vinegar (Acetic acid)
