Do you mean it made the record in WW2, or can it have been made later through modification of the aircraft?

(*)(*)(*)(*), because I was watching a show a while ago and I think they said a modified Hellcat currently has the record.

Hint: It's not a US aircraft.

The answer is the Dornier Do 335 Pfeil (Arrow). Though produced in limited numbers it was much faster then the North American P-51.

Always thought the Do 335 was a way cool plane.

While it is frequently said that Allied strategic bombing didn't accomplish what it was designed to do- the Do 335 is one of several examples of technology which didn't reach operational status because manufacturing plants were destroyed.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devil's_Brigade

The Devil's Brigade (also called The Black Devils and The Black Devils' Brigade and Freddie's Freighters,[1] officially the 1st Special Service Force), was an elite, joint World War II American-Canadian commando unit

Good movie was made about them.

A modified f8f bearcat holds the current piston engine airspeed record. Most assuredley, the F8F Bearcat was the BEST piston driven fighter of WWII. The F8F could out turn both spitfires and mustangs and had a rate of climb that was nearly twice that of the p-51.

Interesting. I am somewhat out of the air racing world, but back when I did watch the air races, Sea Furies and P-51's were both competitive with Bearcats in a circuit race. Did the Bearcat actually see any service in WW2?

The f8f did not see combat in WWII though a squadron of bearcats was operational before the end of hostilities. Rarebear holds the airspeed record for piston powered aircraft though Rarebear was modified to accept the engine used in B29s rather than the R2800 that they originally equipped with. The performance of the F8f is staggerring. While 40mph slower than the mustang it could out turn the P51 and possessed almost 2x the rate of climb. One could also make a strong argument that the bearcat was better armed than the mustang as the 4 20mm canons possessed by the bearcat greatly reduced the number of hits required to score a victory. The army air corp had long recognized the supriority of canons over the .50 bmg but was slow to implement their use. The attributes of the f8f is a testament to the genius of kurt tank as its design was inspired by the.fw190

Early names for the Human Torch and the Invisible Girl?

Seriously I do not know- sounds like code names- perhaps of resistance people but you have me stumped.

The USS Sable and the USS Wolverine were WWII training aircraft carriers. What was unique about their design and where did they serve?

It's been nearly 24 hours so here's the answer.

The USS Sable and USS Wolverine were training aircraft carriers with side paddlewheels for propulsion. They served on the Great Lakes during WWII and were normally berthed at Port of Chicago.

    Someone please ask a question.

With a nasty 88 mounted on it.

I figured our quiz's were getting so obscure that no one was answering them.

Ask an easy one for me.

The original B-17 mounted 7 guns. How many guns were mounted on a B-17G?

This will be my guess- and assuming the G is not some unarmed recon version that I am not aware of.

Later versions of the B17 had I believe 4 forward firing .50 calibers mounted on the nose- to combat German fighters that like to attack head on. So assuming that is right- 2 on the top turret, 2 in the bottom ball turret, 1 in the tail, one each side gunner, and movable gun in the nose (the navigators gun I believe)- 12? Somehow though I am thinking it is 13.

On a side note- got to tour a B-17 at the air museum in Oregon- was shown through it by a WW2 bomber crewmember- great experience. Anyone who has a chance should visit the Evergreen Aviation Museum.

    13.

Twins in the nose. 1 either side. Twins for the ball turret. Twins for the engineer. Twins for the tail gunner. 1 on either side of the sides. 1 for the radio operation.

I'm fortunate to live just north of Oshkosh and since I'm a pilot I belong to the EAA. In 2006 I was able to fly aboard "Aluminum Overcast," one of the few remaining B-17s, during the annual EAA Air Venture. I flew in the top turret. It was quite a thrill.
