Hospital has no option but to fire her. You're talking about medical treatment for patients. Imagine she doesn't do what she's supposed to and someone dies and the family files a lawsuit. Then it comes out that the hospital knew this nurse had blatantly claimed she wouldn't do her job properly in certain situations. That could bury a hospital.

I totally agree that people losing their jobs over posting things on social media is way out of control, but when that thing they post is basically 'I'm not going to do my job', I think that's different. If you find out your employee is refusing to do their job, regardless of how you find out, wouldn't you let them go?

Some people are idiots. They post crap online that could haunt them, and not just today but years on down the road. We see people suddenly finding themselves in the public’s eye and the first thing other people do is look at their social media posts and nail them. Not everyone can make hateful posts like Joy Reid and get away with by saying they were hacked.

And some people, like athletes, who become well known when they get recruited or drafted have tweets dug up from when they were 14 or 15 years old and used against them. Stuff like that shows you how low the media will go.

She does not represent liberals or nurses. She just made a dumb comment. Viagra is not just for sex. They often give it to elderly men in nursing homes. (It keeps them from rolling out of bed at night!)

 

Free speech is both a (supposedly) legally protected right, and an ideal. It is true that, in a legal sense, it applies only to government, but I think we should all strive to try to extend those protections to other spheres.
Similar to how just because discrimination (against certain persons or groups) might be legally allowable in some situations does not mean there is no reason to strive not to discriminate.

It happens all the time. I remember one reporter dug up some old tweets about someone and then people started digging up the reporters old tweets and exposed their hypocrisy. I wish I could remember that story better I'd go find a link.
