There’s almost a sort of sad comedy in listening to Barack Obama of late.

For example, he’s accused President Trump of being divisive. This from the man who bathed the White House in the “LGBT Rainbow” colors the night of the Supreme Court’s same-sex marriage decision.

But there’s something else Mr. Obama said the other day that was a bit head-snapping.

Donald Trump, said Mr. Obama, is “just capitalizing on resentments that politicians have been fanning for years, a fear and anger that’s rooted in our past but it’s also born out of the enormous upheavals that have taken place in your brief lifetimes.”

In a sense, this latest attack on people who supported Mr. Trump is nothing new for Mr. Obama. He offered the same critique in 2008 in a speech in Pennsylvania. He said of people having a tough time in the economy, “They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

How the Left Sees We, the People
Let’s simplify all of this: If you are fed-up with being talked down to by elitists like Mr. Obama, you’re bitter, racist, and full of resentment. You can therefore be manipulated into voting for conservatives and “outsiders.” You poor, pathetic, weak people.

Mr. Obama didn’t speak that last line. He didn’t need to.

Then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, sensing a political opportunity, said of Mr. Obama’s 2008 comments, “I was taken aback by the demeaning remarks Senator Obama made about people in small-town America. His remarks are elitist and out of touch.”

Yes, this is the same Hillary Clinton who claimed in 2016, “You could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic—you name it … (Trump) has lifted them up.”

https://stream.org/liberals-look-people-conservatives-look/ The article says that there are bad outliers in both parties and that the vast majority of base members of both parties are good people. The leadership and ivory tower elites on the left disagree. They feel it impossible to be either good or intelligent and be a conservative. Obama and Clinton demonstrate this by their portrayal of Heartland America's middle and working class as bitter clingers and deplorables. Republicans trust we the people more.

The limousine liberals in their elite bicoastal ivory towers are filled with an arrogant condescending contempt for heartland Americans of the middle and working class.

That's right... make it personal instead of addressing the actual observation that demonstrates the myopic elitism of mr Obama...

I don't think collectivist look down on all people. only certain ones like Americans. I have literally been told by collectivist on this form that illegal immigrants coming into America lowers the crime rate in America because the illegal immigrants are better people than the Americans already here.

So next time a collectivist tells you that they love America know they are lying to your face.

I can understand your angst over folks that oppose Trump. You're right that the elite have a bad history of looking down on Trump supporters (who are not conservative). You also paint a singularly positive of Trump supporter while painting others that don't support him into one hateful mob. This is far from the truth.

Obama is quite right in his assertion that this divisive language and political thrust has been going on for quite some time. I put around the time of the Clinton nomination when the GOP turned loose the attack dogs like Limbaugh and Gingrich. That's when I left the Republican Party as being mean minded and divisive. I remain a conservative. Reagan and Ford left it too.

I agree that some comments by Obama and Clinton were ill conceived. Hilary's "deplorable's" cost her the election, rightly so, IMO. Romney painting 47% of Americans as "takers" cost him the election. Both comments played into the divisive strategy. In both cases, I don't think it was even a strategy, it was just part of their political DNA.

Trump spoke to people right angry at being dismissed and discarded by a Democratic Party that shoved working class White voters aside in favor of costal elites and minorities. They lost an election big time. Much has changed since 2016.

The Democrats have accepted the error of their ways and worked hard to correct it, especially in local elections where they have run up impressive wins. My impression is that Trump voters have second thoughts for lot of reasons I won't dwell on here. Suffice it to say that much has changed in 18 months

I did address the inanity of creating a thread about looking down on people by looking down on 65 million Americans. What else is there to say.

Is this the resentment by conservatives that I keep hearing about? Repeatedly I hear conservatives going on about how inferior liberals are, how they are all on welfare, and the like. Yet here we see the reality.

Its another example of why we say....These people that vote against their own best self interests.....They slit their own throats, and complain...If they just looked around or should I say if they looked up and saw the truths of their votes they should see how they make their lifes harder....Instead piss on the poor, bitch about unions....Mind boggaling stupid....Thats are blue collar republicans!

Interesting math. How, exactly, did commentary about the liberal elite, Obama in particular, translate, in your mind, to 65 million folks?

The Op neglected to point out several points.
    1. Obama is singular not plural.
    2. The was no clear evidence of what the title claims in the OP.
    3. The Op lacked any original thoughts..

You are wrong about why Hillary lost. When one looks at the polls and compares them to announcements concerning her emails, it is clear the email thing cost her the election. And remember, Trump didn't get any more votes, people that otherwise would have voted for Hillary just didn't vote.

There was nothing, absolutely nothing illegal about the email server, the whole thing being a Republican fabricated scandal - the whole right wing dirt machine. Comey, himself, had a private email server. Hillary's mistake was to apologize, thinking that would make it go away. Instead, she should have done what Bernnie did, and call the Republicans out on their dishonest antics.

In the run up to the election, Hillary had a commanding lead. Then Comey announced he had found emails on a laptop. Within three days the polls had completely flipped, giving Trump a commanding lead. Then, as it came to light, that the email announcement was little more than Comey being an idiot, the polls started to show a tightening of the race. The polls continued on after the election with Hillary's support climbing after the election and Trump's declining. Had the election been held a week later, or Comey made his announcement a week earlier, and we would have had president Hillary Clinton. And don't forget, almost 3 million more people voted for Hillary than Trump.

The deplorables would have never voted for Hillary Clinton. Since the 1990's they had been almost daily spoon fed a steady diet of hatred for Hillary. "I'm only joking folks, I'm only joking" was Rush's refrain as he once again trash talked Hillary in his usual despicable manner.

Working people were not dismissed by the Democrats. I'm sure that we are again dealing with another of the conservative false premises that they like to build their arguments upon. Most of the programs that Democrats support, are for the working class. For instance, consistently, those workers who work in union shops earn more money and have greater benefits and workplace protections than those who work in non-union shops. The Democrats support unions while Republicans have long waged a war against unions. The result has been significant. As union membership has declined, so have good jobs, as wages have stagnated. Democrats have also been working on consumer protections, while Republicans have taken efforts to reduce consumer protections. The latest Republican craze has been to push disputes into arbitration, where corporations always have an advantage and individuals are afforded less rights than in a court of law.

During the economic crash at the end of lil Bush's presidency, it was Democrats that were pushing for expanding unemployment insurance, as the number of workers losing their jobs was piling up. It was Republicans that were trying to block that help for workers.

This campaign to claim the Democrats don't care about the middle class workers began about the same time as their campaign to convince blacks, that Democrats didn't care about them. However blacks know where the racists live, and it isn't in the Democratic Party.

I grew up watching William Buckley on Firing Line. It always featured Buckley and perhaps another conservative intellectual having a discussion with one or two liberal intellectuals. It was in watching these shows that I first began to see the shortcomings, from an intellectual point of view, of conservative ideology, as compared to liberal thought. I had been joking about, that when Buckley died, that he was the last of the Republican intellectuals.

But then I decided to go back and watch some of those old shows. Turns out Buckley was mostly just a blow hard. He just dressed it up in intellectual language. No wonder his arguments always came up short to my young ears.

You mean....gasp.... that his political policy was designed to destroy our nation? That consensus? Or were you trying to imply something else... Like when Chris Matthews made his "tingle" comment about how sexually attracted he was to Obama.....
