I believe the cathedral dates back to the 1100's and is CURRENTLY BEING worked on with scaffolding surrounding it.Fire appears to be the entire roof area and the tall spire.

Here is a little history of the Cathedral of Notre Dame.
To see it is engulfed in flames is heartbreaking.

There is a massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral. The spire just fell a short while ago.

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/apr/15/notre-dame-fire-paris-france-cathedral

It is a massive fire. They do not know if they can save it.

The spire has now collapsed after pretty much burning up,the area around the cathedral has been evacuated of all business and residences. The fire is completely out of control.

This is a sad, sad thing.

I grieve for the people of Paris.

Something of beauty has been destroyed.

Notre Dame on fire is a disaster for Paris, for France, and indeed, for the world. This church is an icon, a World Heritage site and loaded with history, drawing an amazing 12 million tourists per year. Just terrible.....watching on TV now, not good.....

I posted this about 2 min. in current events before TC posted this thread:
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...eaks-historic-Notre-Dame-cathedral-Paris.html

This Jew prays they are able to stop this fire. I've been to this place and it is a marvel.

    https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2019/04/15/18/12307276-6925015-image-a-2_1555348981963.jpg

I feel like I almost accidentally burned it down when I visited. I was lighting a candle and a burning ember rolled from the stick I was using under a wooden furniture the candles were on. I dropped to my belly to find it and put it out with my fingers. When I got up, my wife and daughter were laughing their butts off. This thing has stood for centuries but almost didn't survive my visit. But seriously, beautiful place. I'll delete or lock mine if possible.

Eh it'll be catastrophic even if they put it out this very instant.
All the furnishings and historic stuff is mostly wood and metal. The thing is going to be FUBAR now.

The BBC has just talked about the stained glass windows melting. People are trying to get some of the priceless paintings and sculptures and things out.

A world heritage site is gone. Was it a simple accident, terror, a yellow vest action, etc. Why has it taken over two hours to get water on the fire even though the church is on an island. No firefighting water plane...no real serious response at all except Macron cancelling his address to the nation...

Best case...massive bumbling. Worse case terror with bumbling...

Information has just been given that the entire wooden structure will be destroyed. Nothing will remain.

Unclear at this point what has caused the blaze. Some rumors that it might be construction related since there was work being done on the top and that's where the fire was

I just red that apparently there were two start for the fire. Whoever has done that deserve to be guillotined.

have not heard that, if the fire started in two separate locations, that would change things, right now I tend to lean towards a renovation complication, like electrical wiring or something

I suspect the fallout from this will not be good for the government regardless of its cause. 2 hours to get water on the fire on an island is incompetence. If it was yet another gift from the religion of peace, well hell to pay.
