A bill headed through Philadelphia City Hall would force businesses to remove bulletproof glass protecting employees inside stores.

    What's the reasoning here?

    • Councilwoman Cindy Bass, a Democrat who offered the bill, told WTXF-TV she's concerned about shoppers' feelings.
    • "We want to make sure that there isn't this sort of indignity, in my opinion, to serving food through a plexiglass only in certain neighborhoods," Bass told the station.
    • Her so-called "Stop and Go" bill more broadly places controls on small stores that sell alcohol, very little food and are the source of trouble in her district, Bass added to WTXF.
    • "Right now," she told the station, "the plexiglass has to come down."
    • Bass said stores could install more security cameras and use security guards in place of the bulletproof glass, the station said.
    • According to her bio, Bass "served as a committed delegate to Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012 for the Democratic National Convention."

So having armed security (that stores in low income areas can't afford), will make folks feel more dignified than protective glass? I don't see this going anywhere. Another example of government over reach.

The point is the reasoning behind this. "The man" having the means to protect himself is seen as offensive.

And she doesn't really want cameras or security guards, she's just using that as a justification to try to get her law passed.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement supervisors in Philadelphia banned officers from wearing bulletproof vests during an operation in the dangerous “badlands” section in the city’s north for fear of offending the community.

So, that is pretty silly, remove passive protection devices, bullet resistant plastic barriers because it may make customers feel badly in some way ?

I have never heard of such a thing, many Banks have such ballistic barriers and many do not.

My local Wells Fargo does not have ballistic barriers, a U.S. Bank not far away has ballistic barriers and an Armed Security Guard too.

    Edited to add:
Emphasis on passive protection v active devices such as firearms for the immediate protection of cashiers and those with access to cash.

I see no sensible reason to object to ballistic barriers.

In addition to drop safes, to reduce the physical amounts of cash kept on hand over a fixed amount to make change.

How can the anti-gun left complain about victims of gun violence if criminals do not have free access to those victims?

Her constituents complained the partitions were restrictions on their Right to make a living.
So since she favors criminals Rights over those of law abiding people, she wants this legislation, anyone supporting such garbage needs to be voted out of office, even Gun Ban people should see the logic in ballistic barriers.

Every time it is assumed that those who hold public office cannot demonstrate any greater measure of stupidity than has already been seen, a development such as this is brought to our attention, thus demonstrating the bar has once again been moved.

The next thing you know they'll want to have a tank out front. Relax people, this isn't Somalia.

Compared to some locations in the united states, it could be argued that Somalia is technically safer to be in.

The issue is that only businesses in certain neighborhoods have those bulletproof barriers. So the councilwoman sees them as racist, and claims that the crime rate in her neighborhood isn't all that higher than in other neighborhoods that don't have the barriers.

She takes offense that businesses would believe they require extra protection in her neighborhood and sees those barriers as demeaning to her community.

    How silly silly silly.

Ballistic plastic barriers cannot hurt anyone, not a weapon, it does not shoot anyone, can't you stop being Political for a few seconds ?

They rob convenience stores often enough and shoot the clerks, how do you not know this ?

    In America, not Somalia.

I used to open a somewhat smaller vault door, with 2 fingers, you pulled on it for 20 seconds and it would start to open, it weighed a few tons.

In Nawlins there are stores, for example, hardware, where you walk in and are cordoned off from the shelves and stock by a high counter all-around. You tell the clerk what you want, and the clerks gets it for you and then you pay for the goods. Some of these also have an armed guard. But if that is what it takes to stay in business the owners probably should move to a more peaceful place.

If you want to look at items for ideas to solve a problem in a hardware store like that you need to bring a McMaster-Carr Supply book with you to get your idea and then show it to the clerk.

    Move ?
    Why ?
Many people after a large investment cannot move, and suffer a penalty because criminals do not obey laws ?
At some point brave people stop moving and plant some bad guys 6 feet under.

Yeah man, often leasing beats buying the real estate, a kind of pressure relief valve.

Yet somehow she's not offended by her community demeaning her community, by behaving in ways which compel business security measures.

I still do not get an objection to passive non lethal ballistic barriers, that do not harm anyone or pose no danger to anyone.

It makes no sense, even Anti Gun advocates should agree with those barriers.
