Irrevocable break last week with my oldest friend of over 60 years. Political argument. Another one, just as old, just now posted a photo on FB mocking Judge Kavanaugh for "shouting and crying" at his confirmation hearing. I would say he "wept and raised his voice," but in any event I can't have friends like this. Difficult times.
Interesting. I'm in the midst of a Facebook argument with an old Army buddy about Kavanaugh. I'm using law and reason, and he is clearly on the #believeallwomen side of this. The real funny thing is, I know for a fact he's done far worse than anything Kavanaugh is accused of, but he seems totally unaware of the irony. Hope he isn't selected for the Supreme Court.
Perhaps your friend is simply transferring his own guilt then, and applying it to others to make himself feel better. I think that's essentially what Cory Booker did this morning in committee...
That could be. The number of left leaning men I know isn't large at this point in my life, but of all of them, he's really the last one who should be yapping about this. He should take Senator Hirono's advice and shut up.
I rarely ever lose friends over something political. Many of my friends have completely different political beliefs than I do but we still get a long. I don't have any of the type of friends who get all militant with their beliefs and start arguing for no reason or anything. I think the only true "friend" I ever lost due to politics was my ex. It wasn't really an argument or anything specific but rather we simply had completely different views on how the world works and important personal things such as how to raise a family. We got a long just fine in spite of our political differences but there were some things that we just couldn't compromise with each other on that were very important to both of us and we finally realized that it just wasn't going to work.
I have a girlfriend, very dear friend actually, who is a socialist, actually a registered member and she is very active in her support. We simply never, ever discuss politics because once we do there will be lines that can't be uncrossed. I don't judge her and she doesn't judge me, we are just close friends. Its sad because she has to keep me away from her friends and I have to keep her away from mine but together we have a blast. Still waiting for that knock on the door when the FBI wants to know my connection to the socialist party however. lol
Suppose you were ill on election day, too ill to drive. You call your friend and ask her to drive you to the polls, 5 minutes before they close. As you are driving there, a news report comes over the radio that says everyone in the country has voted except for one (meaning you). Trump needs just one more vote to secure reelection, the report continues. You and your friend hear this. Does she keep driving?
Grow up. I hate seeing the ignorance and hypocrisy of leftist on social media. But I put ignore and move on.
I actually do think that we are in a soft civil war at this point, and so it is right and proper that friends divide over major political issues that are driving us apart. I don't say that it is pleasant.
Grow up? If you use the ignore function you are hiding from opposing views. I don't know that that's terribly mature. I don't hide from them, but if you get personal with me, we are done (and you can be penalized here for telling people to grow up, seriously ... you can).
One of the first things everyone should learn about any new acquaintances and friends is whether or not they are people that you can discuss certain issues with like politics or religion. Some people are mentally disturbed and are convinced that their viewpoint is the ONLY POSSIBLE reasonable viewpoint and any others are evil. I remove those people from my life as quickly as possible and if I can't avoid them entirely I just don't talk with them at all since anything could trigger their rage at any second.
There are several kinds of socialist -- I'm going to guess that your friend is a Bernie Sanders supporter, right? Sanders to me is really a liberal, if ultra .... Real socialists, by which I mean ultra hard left Marxists whom I've been trying to debate for years, are a different animal. If one of them knew you were on your way to cast a deciding vote for a conservative, they wouldn't be so accommodating .
I live in Chicago. Many of my friends are hopeless liberals. They post some ignorant **** on FB. I ignore it and move on.
She is hard line socialist. But she would still drive me. And I would still drive her. I don't think you understand true friendship and that is sad.
Well, don't be sad. But what you mean by "hard line"? Did she support Bernie? "Hard line" socialists of the Marxist stripe are violent, "by any means necessary" revolutionaries. Some how I suspect your friend is not that.
I think you need allies in this world, as in people that will drive you to the emergency room, and it's useful to have family. Sometimes.
I never judge my friendships based on political views; I realize and respect their right to believe in the candidate of their choice and likewise they respect the same for me. I have many friends on all sides of the political spectrum and to the best of my knowledge have never lost a friend based on political viewpoints.
In todays political climate it seems to me more a matter of choosing not to make friends than losing them. I have found certain individuals to be vocal and obnoxious concerning their politics which makes it far easier to recognize and avoid them, of course for the like minded it is easier to find friends and have something in common.
I seem to have weaned myself off of Democrat friends. I have my circle of friends bragging to me how good Trump is. Life is great once you don't deal with Democrats.
