It should obviously be legal and it eventually will be in the US. Soda is worse for you, and by keeping it illegal, all you are doing is empowering criminal elements.

    There is a reason.

Prisons. They are the biggest lobbier of keeping marijuana illegal. It makes up a massive part of their prison population.

There is literally no argument to keep it illegal and I believe most Americans now favor legalization. About 60% now support legalization with the opposition overwhelmingly from republicans who think it somehow goes against their christian fundamentalism.

Well we all know that majority vote doesn't win a campaign anymore.

it depends on what the 1%ers have interest in.

You'd think the windfall taxes from pot alone would get it legalized. And I guess it is getting more legal slowly but surely.

I think the right uses christianity and the bible only for show. If republicans cared about christian values, they wouldn't allow the trump maggot to rip insurance coverage away from millions of poor Ameicans. They wouldn't want to destroy the ACA without creating a BETTER replacement, first. They wouldn't have elected trump. And, they wouldn't support a regime infested with the super rich parasites whose lives are spent seeking ways to divert tax payer dollars into their own offshore bank accounts.

They also want the keep the for-profit prisons filled to the rafters with pot users and dealers whose only real crimes are being poor and using pot (which should have been legalized long ago).

HeHe. They have created a new Jesus to fit their political agenda.
Not the Jesus that was a brown skinned Palestinian Jew,
but a new, meaner white Jesus from Indiana, who when feeding the masses, refuses to feed the gay people.
Who is more concerned with what bathroom a person uses than what is in that persons heart.
A white Jesus that is anti abortion, yet could care less about the sick or the poor.
One must always use caution when dealing with the white Jesus followers. :)
    They have issues.

I also suspect that the pharmaceutical industry has something to do with it. It's an inexpensive, useful remedy for a lot of things for which there are expensive drugs with terrible side effects. The real crime is that marijuana is illegal.

Regrettably, Jeff Sessions is anti-pot, but is Trump's stance on the issue? I really don't know. He doesn't strike me as a drug warrior, but I could be wrong.

It is troubling that Fundamentalists have such strange beliefs- beliefs that often have no basis in the Bible and in fact contradict the teachings of Jesus or are just plain nonsensical (such as creationism).

What is more troubling is when they want to force these beliefs on the rest of society through force, coercion and/or physical violence = Law.

What happened to rock on which Jesus based his ministry ? "Do unto others/Treat others as you would be treated/Live and let live" aka The Golden Rule.

There is a difference between 1) having a belief and 2) forcing that belief on others.

What part of "This is the main teaching of Jesus" do these Fundamentalists not understand ?

Tell them the High priest was'nt called that for nothing, he burned "incense" twice a day, the Israelites only went to war when they ran out.

We dont have legaliziation yet but its safe to smoke in pubs etc', it's just a matter of time/

At this point, why is anyone against legalizing that stupid plant? It hardly even does anything and the war against it is costing trillions. Not to mention it's a big reason people sneak into the country. All these Mexican gangs would be in shambles if we legalized pot. It's a major source of revenue for them

Legalize it and use the money being spent to fight it, to fight the serious heroine and opioid epidemic. Let the pot offenders out of jail to make room for the violent thugs.

There is another group with a vested interest in keeping pot illegal, Law Enforcement.

Eliminating the criminal enforcement of pot laws will eliminate significant manpower requirements for local police and Sheriff's. When you see the debate you will note that almost to a man local law enforcement leaders and Sheriff's oppose legalization.

Eliminating the criminal enforcement of pot laws would also significantly lower manpower requirements of the DEA and other federal enforcement agencies.

    All true.

And that is a GREAT reason for the USA to legalize pot (and tax it).

The last thing the USA needs is any more reason to keep enabling power-tripping cops.

You get it. Marijuana is a natural medical supplement that can be used to HELP a lot of different issues. I say help because it's not a cure all. It's beneficial in a lot of cases. Overwhelming studies suggest this.

The problem? Big pharm will lose LOTS of money. Because they can't control the supply of weed. I think the prison situation is secondary to the massive influence the pharm lobbyists have. It would even help this growing narcotic disaster we have in this country. It is WAY better people getting high off weed than heroine. And btw, those FACTS make AG Sessions an absolute moron.

I'm not so sure about big Pharma. My understanding is they have lots of big investments in both current legal operations as well as research.

In any case, I'm pretty sure once the FEDS quit threatening the legal sales the folks in Big Pharma will step in to get their share of the profits.

I think it's scary. That someone would take medical marijuana and drift into another world. That's terrifying. Take it from someone being treated for schizophrenia: reality IS the best place to be. The doctors who prescribe medical marijuana are all monsters.

And wrong again about legalizing marijuana is going to deny the drug gangs of revenue. They can still produce it but now legally. And they can up the potency and make everyone addicted, and keep paying for the same experience.

And this is the first step in legalizing other drugs like crack cocaine. Where you need more and more of it each time to get the same fix, and then end up in the hospital in overdose, or dead.

And it's morally wrong to take drugs. So those taking it are lesser, inferior people.

And the pro-marijuana people are always trying to get everyone to try it, handing out "special" brownies and making free people sick, it's poison. There should be a lawsuit.
